My fiancé lives in the phillipines and we have been using yahoo messenger to talk everyday. Video chat is nice but ym has not been working to good lately. It doesn't notify me when I receive a message anymore and most times the video call won't work. I have to delete the app from my phone then upload it again.

What are you folks using? It would be nice to be able to text anytime...

We used skype and email (that got delivered within minutes to each others' phones). We talked for like 5 hours a day on Skype with the video calling and that worked out just fine. You can also get a local number with Skype and text an actual cell phone.

I use Google hangouts or video chat on Google talk. We can do the Google hangouts/video chats either on our computers or our phones.

my fiance is in Vietnam.

When I was there in October I gave him an Iphone...there's 3g availability everywhere in VN now so he's able to get calls.

with that we use Skype, Tango, Viber (allows me to download all my text msgs with him and email) to talk...there's another application called KaKaoTalk(text msg) too...all of these offers free calls and tango & skype allows me to video call my fiance :D

I also got him to set up a FaceBook account before I left too. So I post on his wall and so forth on there too.

then there's the usual email...I also have V24/7...

We used to use yahoo but it kept lagging.

My fiancee and I were also using Yahoo messenger but stopped a few months ago as it started dropping our messages too :(. Glad to see we weren't the only ones with technical difficulties! We've since switched to Facebook messaging. Not as convenient IMO, but more reliable.

You can combine the programs. We used MSN Messenger for webcam and skype for audio. Audio was crystal clear on skype when not running the webcam through skype. Video was awesome on messenger when not running audio.

We used Skype to video chat this evening. I also got the free app Viper downloaded on my iPhone. Will try that out as soon as my fiancé gets it on her phone. Thanks for the advice folks. Greatly appreciated :)

When my wife was there we used both skype and yahoo. We'd have audio running in skype, and the video running in Yahoo. When she moved out of the downtown area of Davao City to the edge of the burbs there, her connection went to heck. Previously we could use anything and it would work well, but the poor connection required we improvise. With audio in Skype, we could restart that as needed and restart the video in Yahoo as needed without disturbing the other app. Plus we could text type words in either app when needed. We still do the same thing when we communicate with her family. We talked on the phone daily to, and the cheapest way for that was my wife buying international load cards with Globe. A 100P card would give us about 45 minutes of talk time. Both Globe and Smart now offer unlimited calling plans from the USA to cells on their systems. If my wife was still there, I'd consider signing up with those, although I'm always a little worried getting a subscription to company in the Philippines. Contracts with those companies mean you have to pay, even if the service doesn't work. At least if you're in the Philippines it works that way.

We always have problems with audio/video, so frustrating. How do you combine the programs to use one for audio and one for video? Thanks

We also use Skype for chat. We have the video up most of the time at home. Not a big time difference between us luckily.

I have the phone app so we can IM each other when I am at work in the evenings.

Disable audio/audio source in one program(not just the conversation but in the settings) and only make a phone call in the other. Voila! : )
