Now you're splitting hairs. Google it if you want actuall numbers. The turnouts we have here for the cash for guns program is usually high, a hundred or so every time I believe. I would say getting just one illegal gun off the street that has the potential to kill someone is "working well", wouldn't you?

But let's not focus just on illegal guns, a lot if not most of these mass killings are done with legally owned, high powered automnatic weapons, that's where the chunk of the problem lies.

Show me an incident where a legal "automatic" weapon was used in a crime?

Define "high power"? If the weapon used was an AR-15, it is not an automatic weapon, and shoots a 5.56 mm bullet, (basically .22 caliber). My semi automatic 30.06 Browning hunting rifle is far more powerful.

Valerie, I am not attempting to diminish your arguments of the other outside factors that contribute to gun deaths, because they definitely all play a role. The idea of stricter gun regulations is not a fix all, it's just a way to diminish the numbers.

likewise, i think guns for cash and such are effective in a small scale and there is nothing wrong with trying to limit the number of guns just lying around. my issue is what just happened with this thread. everyone gets all up in arms about their rights to gun ownership, who should be allowed to own what and what is considered frivolous access or the number of bullets spent. the conversation from the start should be about why this happens. we know the how. we can't control the how effectively without negating others' rights. we need to make our primary focus the why.

Machine guns account for 3% of the homicides in California. "Legal" is splitting hairs.

Yesterday's mass killing: 3 dead (including the gunman) That's a normal day in Chicago.

The Futility of Chicago's Gun Turn-Ins

Who is most likely to turn in a firearm for a $100 reward? Someone with 1) a cheap gun and 2) no criminal propensity

Yep the forefathers who wrote the constitution did not know any better.

Guy in colorado was nuts... if a nut drives a car into a bldg would you ban car?

Running around in circles? The ridiculousness of the car to firearm comparison was discussed at length. Nobody takes that seriously and bringing it up again and again only makes you look more silly. So, drop it already.

Still amused with the military coup thingy. It's even funnier seeing that we'll fight back a military coup attempt with our constitutionally protected sports equipment.

Oh, so the fact that they are already breaking the law is splitting hairs - gotcha. One more law will make them comply.

PS - it was 2%

LOL @ the posters talking about legal gun owners and murder. Three people dead in an Oregon mall makes headline news.

19 people shot in overnight shootings across Chicago

Nineteen people were shot across the South and West sides from Thursday evening through early Friday morning -- 13 of them wounded over a 30-minute period, authorities say.

The overnight shootings peaked between 9:15 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. That's when eight people, many of them teens, were shot at 79th Street and Essex Avenue about 9:30 p.m.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Evidently the "friend" was negligent in not securing the weapon properly. I hope the victims' families sue the "friend" for everything he has. Trigger locks and gun safes should be the minimum for securing any weapon.

LOL - gun nuts still don't grasp that what's at issue is the ready and easy availability of firearms to anyone in this country. That is responsible for the deaths in Oregon just as much as for the deaths in Chicago. It is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths each and every year. These tens of thousands of lives lost year after year we easily gloss over but god forbid a fraction of that falls victim to a terrorist attack once in a century. I guess as long as it's Americans killing other Americans it's all good.

Yes coz you think you know more than ppl who wrote the constitution, you forgetting some of the things you enjoy in your life is coz of them.

As usual u are not aware of the number of firearms in hands of civilians and military.

can you give a reason why constitution is very specific about right of citizen to bear firearm?

Try again - Supreme Court said any requirement for trigger locks is unconstitutional.

The people you call gun nuts are the same people who are Americans that believe in their Constitutional rights. Three gun related deaths in Oregon made headline news because the media likes to pick and choose. Most of your gun related deaths in the US are committed in big cities by the scum of the earth. US inner cities have become a cesspool of rodents with no morals. DC, Detroit, Oakland, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans, etc....that's where the large majority of gun related deaths are located...not legal gun owners.

Three white people where shot and killed in suburbia Oregon and it's the rage of the news today. How many people were gunned down in inner city Chicago last night? Why isn't the media jumping all over that?

Evidently the "friend" was negligent in not securing the weapon properly. I hope the victims' families sue the "friend" for everything he has. Trigger locks and gun safes should be the minimum for securing any weapon.

Ya I'm sure trigger locks are the rage in Oakland. Then again none of us were born yesterday.

Trigger locks

SCOTUS also says that it is okay to put a crucifix in a mason jar and piss on it, but that doesn't mean that is the prudent thing to do.

What part of the word "should" don't you understand?
