Hi guys, I got my IR-1 visa last month and after holidays we are planning to move out to the the us (my wife and son are both usc). Im moving cuz my wife misses her life there and i promissed her to try luck in america.

I have no idea about the american jobs market so maybe you people can give me an idea of where im at.

Im 30 years old, from Argentina, i have a Bachelor Degree in Business Admninistration. My degree is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), dont know if this works in the us.

I work since im 20, and i've worked for the local government and for a project between the local government and the world bank as a procurement consultant. I was invited twice to DC to attend training courses in the procurement field. Currently im working as a Coordinator of Administration and Finances for a Pharmaceutical company here in Buenos Aires.

I know you are not the Human Resources department but definetly know more than me about the job situation in the states. I would like to know your opinion about my qualifications.

Thank u all.

With national unemployment at 7.8% you might find it more difficult than usual, but still very probable, just might not be exactly in your industry. If you are looking for a job, you can increase your chances of finding a job if you are open to moving to more geographic locations. So for instance, if you decide "I'm willing to move anywhere in the US," there is a higher probability for finding a job (especially in your field) than if you decide "I want to live in Orlando, Florida." Also, if you aren't as open to moving ANYWHERE, and you had a particular state in mind, the principle applies. The more places you're willing to go, the better your chances of finding a job. Probability is good, since more people are hiring, and more hiring means more HR positions are able to be filled.

Also, ACBSP is CHEA recognized, so your coursework should be relevant to the US market.

Agree with bsd, the job market isn't great, but it's definitely better in some areas than others. If you and your family are flexible on where you want to live, there are definitely opportunities to be had. That said, be sure to weigh the cost of living and other important factors (e.g. schools, crime, etc.) that will be important overall when thinking about salaries, etc.

Big pharma is thriving, so if you're interested in staying in that industry, do research on the big companies and learn where they're headquartered. You can typically look up this information on their corporate site, LinkedIn, and/or Hoover's. Good luck!!

To be more accurate, if we count Unemployment Outflow, Uo, as new jobs created in October 2012, then Uo = 4,084,000 per month. <--Per labour stats found here: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/jolts.pdf .

And if we count the current Unemployment Stock as Us = 12,000,000. <--Per labour statistics found here: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm .

The average turnaround rate in the economy (the average time the average person waits before they find a job) is t = Us / Uo = 12,000,000 unemployed / 4,084,000 jobs/month = 2.94 months unemployed/job. So there is a .5 probability that you will be waiting less than 2.94 months if you are actively looking for a job in the US and are qualified to work there. So there is a good chance that you will search for 3 months before you are hired, but any longer than this is unlikely. Especially, if the outflow of unemployment is raised as more and more jobs are created over the next few months!

Hope this helps put your mind as ease!

THIS WHAT WORRIES ME TOO, finding a job when i get there. if you apply in target, kohls or other retail stores, is that as hard as well or much easier than landing your previous job in an office?

The less experience needed, the easier it is to get the job. So you tell me.

A wife and son and you wait until the last moment to plan how you're going to support them in a different country? Didn't it take about 5 months to get that IR-1? Better late than never I suppose.

Well it isn't exactly easy to do from abroad as you can't apply for job if you don't know when you are going to be in the country. Canadians have it a little easier in that regard. :star:

For us, we don't know what my husband will be doing in America because his job is a little city specific and we won't be living in one (or near one hopefully).

3/2/18  E-filed N-400 under 5 year rule

3/26/18 Biometrics

7/2019-12/2019 (Yes, 16- 21 months) Estimated time to interview MSP office.

Applying for a job? This poster admittedly has no clue what the job market is even like in the US, let alone any prospects. He was able to find this site and ask other people to help him at the last moment, yet he couldn't do a a few simple searches for employment in his field within the last 5 months or so and maybe make some contacts? It doesn't matter what country a person is from to be prepared, especially with the availability of the internet . Jump ahead a few months, we'll see him posting in the major effects section wondering what went wrong with his move to the US. Sorry to sound so harsh, but people that don't take responsibility for themselves drive me nuts.

If he actively searches for a new HR job, he will probably be able to find a fit within a few months under normal circumstances. Quicker if he expands his search area. HR is expected to grow at 21% from 2010 - 2020, and right now the average turnaround time is approx 3 months for the economy. He has a good chance of getting into a job quicker than most other fields. But he still needs to actively search to increase his probability of finding a job. That's the key. Being in my field, I found a job before I have even been approved for my I-130 because I wanted to get a head start. But now I have to wait and so the opportunity is probably gone (though I told them I was waiting on a green card I told them I thought it would be much faster). Hopefully this I-130 gets approved soon. Then I will see if it's still on the table at least.
