World Bank warns of ‘4-degree’ threshold of global temperature increase

The World Bank is urging stepped-up efforts to meet world carbon-reduction goals after looking at what it says would be the catastrophic consequences if average world temperatures rise more than 4 degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of the century.

In what World Bank President Jim Yong Kim acknowledged was a “doomsday scenario,” anew study by the organization cited the 4-degree increase as a threshold that would be likely to trigger widespread crop failures and malnutrition and dislocate large numbers of people from land inundated by rising seas.

World climate goals aim to hold the mean temperature increase to less than 2 degrees Celsius, by curbing emissions of greenhouse gases that trap heat — a phenomenon already thought to have boosted average temperatures nearly 1 degree from levels present before the start of the industrial age, Kim said in a briefing last week.

There is not the political will to act responsibly to stop this from occurring. Even most liberals here in the USA would not even consider cutting back our per capita energy use to what it would take on a world-wide basis to stop this from occurring. It is hard to blame those in developing economies from refusing to do the heavy lifting to reduce carbon output when it is the west and the US especially that has gotten us to this point. It is easier for most to simply bury their heads in the sand and pretend none of this is real! Watch and see who on here will do this! They are reflective of the many that will prevent the responsible among us from being able to do what is necessary! The world may not end this Dec 21 but the sense that we are all partying hard while the end approaches is there, nonetheless!

So Steven,

Are you driving a Nissan leaf, powered off of solar panels and your own personal wind turbines? Have you stopped watching TV, using the internet, starting growing your own food, getting your own water, and doing your part here?

Oh wait, that's right! That whole hypocrisy BS from the left. I forgot.

Carry on!

I don't think most people realize how these catastrophic changes are going to cripple economies. They think that maybe we'll see more storms like Sandy and that's about it. Food prices are going to skyrocket. We're in for a world of hurt and it's both sad and depressing because this was all preventable. Scientists estimate that only half a billion humans will survive this man-made rate of change. Less than 10 percent of the living species will survive.
