Hello everyone

I'm the Canadian girl (49) who has fallen for the US guy. We're not officially engaged yet though we've talked about it. We've known each other for a while but started dating a year and a half ago.

We both have decent jobs, but it looks as though I would be the one moving to the US, rather than him coming here. I visit every couple of months, and he comes up here once in a while too.

I really had no idea it was so difficult and time consuming to get married and move south. I've been reading here for a few hours today and I am quite overwhelmed. Good thing I'm not in a hurry to move.

I hope the rules and procedures will become a little more clear once I figure out what all the names and forms and things are all about.

Thanking you all in advance for the help I'm sure to need!!

Hello,

The process can be very overwhelming at first, but once you do your research you will start to understand everything. It's not a hard procces, time consuming and making sure all your documents are filled out correctly. One very important piece of advice is to check all your forms many times, and have your SO check them as well for errors. You will be fine, I felt the same way when I started this procces. Use the guides on this website, forums, research www.USCIS.gov and ask questions. If your going the marriage route, you will need the following to start:

A cover letter is not required, helps to see whats in the packed when you send it.

I-130 form, no photocopies for filing forms all need to be original

check for $420 made out to U.S Department of Homeland Security

G-325 form /Biography. One for each of you

The USC proof of Citizenship, Copy of Naturalization certificate or photocopy of EACH page of the passport. A USCS birth certificate is also proof

One passport-type photo, attached to G-325A (One of you and your spouse) Write names on the back, placed in a plastic bag

Marriage certificate (Certified copy)

A copy of a prior spouse's death certificate. (If one or both of you were married before, and the prior spouse died)

Prior Divorce documents if applicable

If you have ever had a name change, that would be needed as well

Evidence of a bonafide marriage (the more the better in my opinion)

I hope this all helps, good luck on everything:

Carlos
