  • Tax Return Transcript provides most
    line items from your original return.
  • Tax Account Transcript provides
    basic info, including marital status,
    type of return filed, AGI, taxable income, and later adjustments, if any.

  • Social Security Number (or
    your IRS individual taxpayer
    identification number);
  • Date of birth;
  • Street address; and
  • Zip Code or Postal Code.

I just called that number with that minimal amount of information, had to specify the tax year I wanted, and do that three times for each year. Did ask if you wanted another year. Was talking to computer, took about five minutes. Came in in three separate envelops for each tax year in about five days.

I could never order tax transcripts from them. I tried, I think, twice - over the phone and online. It told me the same thing over the phone, and online it said that since we changed the address, it couldn't provide any info.

I will be trying the last thing left to do - sending out the form via usps. PIA.

Ha, even our small town with a population of 19,000 has an IRS office, but don't bother to go there to get forms, tell you to download those off the net.

What was key in providing your own returns was to keep the originals with the IRS label on it, can't even get those anymore, and if you do your taxes online, have to type out all of your W2's and 1099's.

I didn't brother with transcripts with my wife, had the originals with the IRS label on it, still had to download all the forms, but to be legal, have to hand sign each copy. A photocopy of your signature is not legal.

I gather if you had a change of address, would have to make separate calls for each address change for that given tax year, tax year is always the prior year. Ha, my wife's IO was so dumb, she didn't even know that. The same with our joint property tax bill.

It can be frustrating to say the least, but it has to be done.

Call and get a live person on the phone. When I needed my first set of transcripts I could not used the automated line or irs.gov. One of my transcripts was linked to my ex-husband who was an IRS employee and it raised a red flag. The live rep was able to send the transcript through, no problem.
