M1 vs. F1

M1 and F1 visas are both student visas that people can apply for to study at universities in the US. How is the distinction made between M1/F1? Are there different schools that qualify for different visas? Degree type?

M1 visas are for vocational type schools...cooking, gemology (whatever that is), flying, etc....with no four year degree as the objective.

So bachelors degree = F1, associates degree or certificate = M1?

Can one get a visa for apprenticeship programs?

associate degrees are given by community colleges, and in general an F1 visa is required for that...M1 visas are for the types of subjects in which one does not earn any degree, but rather acquires certain skills, which may or may not be marketable in one's home country.

So would one be able to obtain an M1 visa for apprenticeship programs? Ex: machinist, electrician, metalworking, HVAC, etc

doubtful such programs exist...best to check with those institutions who are authorized to issue M1/I20s for their courses...

Is there a list of such institutions?
