The article I posted is a study about many right to work states that had already instituted it.

From the Economic Policy Institute. Hmm let's see who they are. http://www.epi.org/about/board/

Board of Directors

Richard L. Trumka, Chairman

AFL-CIO

R. Thomas Buffenbarger

International Association of Machinists & Allied Workers (IAMAW)

Larry Cohen

Communications Workers of America (CWA)

Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins

Green for All

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.)

Jeff Faux

Economic Policy Institute

Leo W. Gerard

United Steelworkers of America (USWA)

I'll stop there, but you get the point. Not exactly a bunch of folks without a union agenda. That is like having an environmental policy institute and having all the board members being executives from the major oil companies.

And I am sure we will find the opposing side has an agenda as well - making profits at the expense of workers. That's just how things roll here in the good ole USA.

Newsflash! If the company doesn't make a profit, it goes bankrupt and the workers have no jobs.

So I took Big Dog's advice and started reading up a little on unions in Germany. Interesting to say the least so far.

I'm gonna read more.

Very simple concept. I watched the Union thugs destroy a company that i worked for , for over 15 years.

It's a big deal when you realize that unions have run Michigan for the past 80+ years, and almost all the auto factories are shut down in part due to the unions influence.

Agree and how could these union thugs be against it ? I though liberals liked choice. All it says is you have the right to not be part of the Union. Seems like a very basic freedom, any worker should have.

I don't know either but what we have in Right to Work states is not a right to work. If there was a right to work, then presumably there would be no involuntarily unemployed people in those states. We all know that there are plenty of those in Right to Work states. Hence, it's a deceiving label.

It means you have the right to work for a company, without being forced to join a Union. I did it in Georgia. I caught hell from the lazy Union thugs. They always encourged me to kick back, take it easy, let the next man take care of it.

Well I did not and 6 years later I was their boss making 3 times what they made. Guess they showed me huh ?

Although 8+ years old, this is pretty interesting:

Seems they have less of a "me first" attitude on both sides of the debate in parts of Europe at least.

Right. And that is why unions remain important. It's not a coincidence that along with the demise of unions, wages and benefits for most Americans remain flatlined. It's not a coincidence that along with the demise of unions, gains in productivity are no longer shared but all go back to the plutocrats. If you believe that a middle class will continue to exist in this country without unions, you've learned nothing over the last few decades.

Should that right not exist both ways? Should a worker then not also have the right to join a union working for any company in the state? Doesn't work the other way around. How come? Since we're apparently taking workers' rights and all. Let's at least e honest when talking about this issue: It ain't about workers rights. Not at all.

What about the choice to be represented by a union? Right to Work doesn't give you that choice. It's a one way street promoting free riding. That seems to become the guiding principle of the Republican Party - the right of people to a free ride. Be it on compensation packages, health care or whatever.

This will make a good bumper sticker:

I vote Republican because I like to let the other guy do the heavy lifting

I'm basing my opinions directly from what I have seen growing up. My grandfather was union all the way. He worked for Michigan Bell for 36 years. My grandmother never worked a job, ever. Hell she never learned how to drive. My grandfather did more for me than both my parents combined. In my mind he was an awesome man.

I'll leave it at that I guess. I'm not gonna bad mouth him here.

Do you at least recognize the correlation between your grandfather's union membership and the way of life he provided for your grandmother and other family? Unions are what really created that idyllic 50's era middle class. Get rid of the unions and the middle class shrinks way down! Wage inequality is why things are so bad for the many in spite of an economy that is actually doing quite well. The plutocrats on top are taking it all. The more you knock down unions the worse it is going to get for everyone outside the 1%! It is amazing to me how the slick political ads are so effective in winning the votes of the weak-minded to vote against their own economic self-interest! Ignorance can be really costly!
