So as to not add a not a new post, I'll ask my question here. For other name, If my legal name is Stephen but I mainly go by Steve would I add this here? Or is it for cases where one might use a middle name or another name, and not just a shortened version of our legal name?

As far as I can understand, "Other names used" refer to all the names you have used in your legal documents (birth certificate, marriage certificate, passport, naturalization certificate etc..) and identification cards (driver's license, state ID etc..). Nicknames are not included.

Im pretty sure apple21 is right and nicknames aren't included. Other names means like maiden names or any name changed by deed poll. A nickname isn't legal :)

I disagree. I think long-standing nicknames should be included, even if it is not on your official paperwork. Your fiance might call you Steve in your interview, and your email might say the same, and it should be clear that Steve is you. There is no harm to put it on the form.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

I always understood that part as it was described before, but what you said makes perfect sense; especially for certain names like Steve/Stephen, John/Jack, etc.

several years back there was a denail reported for stephen vs steven ( was not on the other names used ) through Ghana . There may have been more than that going on with that relationship. I know about a year ago there was a Nigerian denial for a totally different name and passport ( finger prints caught him ) it is always safer to add it.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Can you imagine Russian fiancee, her interview is the last step before she can marry the love of her life, Bob. She sits down with the Consular Officer, her emotions a jumble of excitement and nerves.

CO: How long have you known Robert?

Fiancee: Who?

CO: ...

I hadn't thought about it that way because in Spanish, there are certain nicknames that are name specific, such as Ignacio (nickname Nacho); but the nicknames don't "replace" the original name (at least not to other Spanish speakers).

So, in a scenario like that, it'd might be less likely to happen than with Bob, #######, Jack, etc

Ha! Thank you for opening my mind yes.gif
