Is anyone going to a Phil/Am Christmas party this year? We are, this Saturday. Lot's of good food, friends, and entertainment. If you're new to the area it's a great way to make new friends.

Yep, one of the local Filipino organizations is holding one this weekend in the Minnesota. I had asked the wife if she wanted to go and of course she said yes. Afterwards we're going to a Mexican restaurant, and I mean one that Mexicans hang out in, to watch the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight. I have a 50P bet with my wife on the outcome, I've got Pacquiao  My wife has always rooted for him to loose

We just had ours last night, Saturday, December 8. We got there a little late though because my wife had to work until 7PM. About the only thing left to eat were some of the deserts. It was funny though, because in the midst of all the loud noise, large groups of filipinas giggling and grouping together cheek to cheek for group pictures in their satiny party dresses, and all that, my wife blurts out to me from across the table "They all look the same to me!" I laughed, because I told her I thought me being the white guy was supposed to think that. But she said after all this time of living and working around white people, the Filipinas all start looking alike to her, with all black or dark brown hair, same length, same facial structures, same body builds for the most part... It just was sort of funny to me to hear that coming from her, "they all look the same!"

Had a great time at the party last night. As usual, I brought a flask of Scotch to take the edge off of the entertainment

As far as looking alike, I figured that out in a mall in Manila when my wife took off to look for a pair of jeans and I tried to find her. I quickly figured out that womens jeans aren't all in one section of the store. They're scattered out all over the place. I had a sales woman dragging me over the entire store looking for my wife, the one with a purple flower in her hair. That was the only distiguishing characteristic I could give them.

A flask of scotch...... Now there, that is a good idea. Too bad my wife wont let me drink though, hehe. But the "entertainment" at those things isnt exactly thrilling. the thing that comes to mind if asked what goes on at those things would be, without giving it a lot of thought at first, is #1 hearing the door prize numbers read off (and we did win a $25 door prize to Cracker Barrel). Seems they spent the entire night just doing that, with a song and dance peppered in between. And #2 was trying to keep my eyes averted from the butts sticking in my face as the young Fillipinas huddled together, getting there pictures taken. It was so crowded. I didnt want to hurt my wife by looking. Made a real conscious effort not to look, and that was pretty difficult.

The Pasko celebration was in Lake Elmo (east of St Paul) at Guardian Angels Church. Sorry I didn't see this until now.

Below is a link to the groups facebook page. They usually add events to it before they come up, but not always. If you go to their notes section of the FB page, they have a link to their google calendar, which shows everything they're up to.

The next event they have is

CSFA Carolers at Simbang Gabi

When

Sat, December 22, 6am – 7am

Where

Blessed Sacrament Church, 1801 LaCrosse Avenue Saint Paul, MN 55119

Do they also do a traveling Santo Nino prayer group throughout the year? The way I understand it, the statue travels from house to house and the group gathers for prayers and a meal each month. I'm not sure if I have all the details correct. We've been invited but that would mean our house would have to be spotless and it seems like a lot of work ;)

If they do have a Santo Nino prayer group, I'm not aware of it. We're really not that tight with the group, we have our own circle of Fil/AM friends who we mostly hang out with. We just go to the bigger events they host, although we are members of the group. There's actually more than one Fil/Am group in the Minneapolis/ST Paul area. We joined the other group to, but it appears they lost our application but kept the money, as they've never put us on their mailing list  Then there's the Filipino student group, a Filipino Church, and a Filipino Women's Network, Philippines Center (which recently purchased their own building), plus more. Some are closely related and some seem to act in competition with each other.

I'd like to discuss the "competition" sometime but I think that's for another thread. Should I start one?:lol:

BTW, your wife got her wish BIG TIME! (Paquiao)

Here in Indianapolis, I have not been able to find a PhilAm group. Was looking so when she gets here next year, her and her son could make some friends that way. Did find a club called Barangay Club but it didn't seem like they do much. Maybe I was spoil when I was in Jacksonville NC and participated with the PhilAm there at Camp Lejeune.
