Bringing computer and harddrives to America

Hi guys! I have a question. I have my plane tickets booked and paid for. I'm flying over to reunite with my wife in Pittsburgh on December 23rd.

My question is this: I want to bring my computer and two external harddrives. What do I have to do in order to do that? What do I need to be mindful of?

Thanks.

PS. To the moderators: I posted this in a different sub forum and someone suggested I get some feedback from other people from Europe who have been in my situation, so I would appreciate it if you can let me keep these two separate threads, even though they're on the same topic. Thanks. :)

Well I don't see why there would be any problem with bringing that stuff. You can put the harddrives in the suitcase and the computer in the carry on in case you're worried they might think that 1 computer and 2 harddrives is a dangerous combo.

Have you heard any people having problems with that?

We just entered a few months ago, and my husband and I brought a laptop each and he brought an external hard drive. We packed them in our carry-on and had no problem. If you have heard specific problems, maybe check out the POE (point of entry) page of where you will be entering, but I can't imagine there being any trouble! Good luck!

The only thing I would worry about is that the power supply is a universial DC converter and can accept the EU 220 V or the US 120 V. Most can even accept the 100 V in Japan. Then all you need is a plug converter.

There is no problem at all to bring this in your checked or carry on luggage. I have done it on several different occasions. I just suggest you make sure it is well padded(clothes, blankets, etc.) in the checked luggage as they do throw the luggage around when loading and unloading the plane.

I have a Mac Mini and it is definitely small enough to fit in my backpack. I am going to pad it with clothes, for sure. I will feel a lot better about it if I bring it in my carry-on bag rather than the suitcase. Like someone said, you never know with the bagage handlers, they probably toss the suitcases around without much care about what's inside of the luggage.

Thanks for all you input btw. I have been told that my Swedish Mac computer will be able to run on American electricity, with volts and watts and so on.
