Hello,

We are so much in the dark about what to do next. We have the wedding one week before the expiration of the K1 (90 days). Where can I find phone numbers or specific instruction on what to do as far as AOS goes? Do we need to submit all the document before the 90 days end? Once we go to court and finalize the Marriage license, it takes them two to four weeks to mail us the marriage certificate (in Texas, we need to obtain a marriage license, have a pastor or judge sign sign it, then we receive the certificate in two to four weeks).

Please help, Thanks

You do not need to submit all the documents before 90 days - you just need to get married before the 90 days

If you explain it to whomever is signing your marriage certificate you should be able to keep it after they sign it and bring it to the courthouse to file yourself. That way you can ask on the spot for as many copies as you need since it really only takes them a minute to make them. When I did this they didn't have a problem with it and they gave me the impression it's pretty standard since most people want to change their name right away. Just make sure you have all your other evidence documents ready and you could file your package the same day you file your marriage certificate if you're worried about it.

BUT....

To put your new family member(s) on your health insurance at your job, you ARE required to submit this certificate within 30 days of the event to your insurance company as required by federal law (dictated because by tax laws related to payroll issues).

I got married here in Texas this year. We got our license in Houston (Harris County)--BIG mistake. They held on to the certificate and when I went in, after 5 weeks and threw a fit, the clerk only gave in and just PRINTED OUT THE COPIES, as she would have done anyway when I told everyone else in line to leave and go to another county since they'll hold your documents. People started leaving, so she told me, "Fine" and had the stamped copies in my hands in moments.

GGGRRRRRRR.... Bureaucracy.

(The pastor told me he had sent it in immediately.)

Wherever you marry in the state, you can buy your license in any Texas county. I recommend a smaller one. Ask if it can be recorded and released the same day as it is submitted. This can save you some headache in getting the other documents and issues taken care of.

A pair of friends who got married in August in Stafford, Texas (Brazoria county) had their recorded certificate the same day of the marriage and were able to start the paperwork that evening. Sadly, that was closer to my house than my own local Tax Office. Lesson learned.

 This is what we did. A few days before our wedding, I contacted the county clerk first to make sure that was OK to do. (It was.) We were married on a Saturday and were in the county's office right after they opened on Monday morning with our completed docs, paid the fees for four certified copies, and then headed to the Social Security office.

Count your lucky stars, In Los Angeles County it takes minimum 6 to 8 weeks to get a the marriage license recorded and certified. We got married October 21st and been down the the LA County recorder twice and am now calling in every other day, still not recorded. Going on 7 weeks now.

Evidently they did away with the expedite for a fee in September which took 3 weeks so now it is another waiting game.
