At first I thought she had been convicted for being raped because that's what I got from reading the OP.

The very first sentence of the excerpt I pasted reads as follows:

Saudi court has sentenced a gang rape victim to 90 lashes of the whip because she was alone in a car with a man to whom she was not married.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

I mean.... I try so hard to respect EVERY religion and tradition.... I try so hard!

But come on... how can I even try to remain fair and open minded in a situation like this? It's sick.....

It is against the law in the kingdom to be alone with an unrelated male.... the punishment is as stated.

How can you ask for one crime to be punished while asking another to be ignored?

Maybe in this case because of the trauma she and her male friend already went through they could waive the punishment and from what I've read in the other article their families (as well as her fiance) are appealing their punishment. Maybe they will overturn it.

She was obviously aware that she was breaking the law because she lied to the authorities about being with the man at first.

I agree with you in a way. She was aware of the law but chose to do it anyway. Even though I don't agree with the law, I can't judge the fact she's being punished for breaking it.....

And that's why, after reading the post that explains why she was convicted, I said it wasn't as bad as I thought it was.

Edit: Just read the post above mine and well.... she wasn't punished for being raped, she was punished for having met in in private. It's still bad, but not as bad.

At first I thought she had been convicted for being raped because that's what I got from reading the OP.

I know and that's why I posted the story from a different source.

It is against the law in the kingdom to be alone with an unrelated male

Why?

Because that's just the way it is there... why is it illegal for people to have sex in public here?

It would seem she has suffered enough however, she knew the law. Whether we agree with it or not is not the point. It is not our law to agree with.

The title of your thread is misleading... "Saudi woman gang-raped by 4 men sentenced to 90 lashes by Saudi court, her husband will appeal for "harsher" penalty"

First of all she's not married she was engaged.... her fiance is not appealing for harsher penalty for her  he and her family are appealing to have her and the other man's punishments removed because they were raped in the event and for the rapists to recieve a harsher punishment than the lashes and prison time they received.

The way your title reads is that she was sentanced to receive 90 lashes because she was raped when that's clearly not the truth. It also sounds like her husband (who is not her husband yet) are appealing for her to get a harsher penalty when that's not true either.

They also clearly do not know the facts since the woman was not yet married.

It is against the law in the kingdom to be alone with an unrelated male

Why?

Because that's just the way it is there... why is it illegal for people to have sex in public here?

I can not quite follow this reasoning: a woman being alone with an unrelated male equals their having sex?

I don't thing so.

But as long as there are people around who say "because that's just the way it is" laws suppressing and oppressing women all over the world will not be scrapped.

Sad. Very sad.

No I'm not equating being alone together with sex... I just used an example of an indecency law here that some may not agree with.

They are allowed to have laws there the same as we are allowed to have whatever laws we want here and just because someone doesn't want to follow it doesn't mean they don't have to.

I don't see how a law that does not allow unrelated men and women to be alone together is supressive or oppresive to women though

Not my place to criticize the laws or punishment of another country. People living there supposedly know the law and what happens if you break the law. I wouldn't want to live there, but a lot of them aren't exactly happy about the way we run things here either. Another case just of mind our own business.

This may not be a penalty because it presumes that he has pubic hair to begin with. Clean people stay clean or shaved...It would be like sentencing a bald man to a hair cut!

First pluck out each pubic hair individually, smash their knackers with a claw hammer and THEN cut them off....

Much better.....

You don't?

With all due respect, but this is mindboggling.

Just the logistics of making sure that a woman is never alone with an unrelated male are quite something.

Oh, wait, I forgot - it's easy: lock the women away and give them lashes when they cross the line.

But no, that's not suppression and oppression. That's respect, compassion and understanding.

Nice.

Hey guess what... no one is locking anyone away... it's really not very hard to NOT be alone with a man.. plenty of women manage to do so daily with no issue

It's also not a law that only carries a punishment for women so to call it oppressive towards women is just nonsense.... as I recall the man and woman recieved an equal punishment.... sounds pretty balanced to me.

A final word:

Tell that to the multitude of women in Saudi-Arabia who yearn and long for the simple freedom to lead a normal life and are prevented from it.

And to you - good luck in your cage. You apparently threw the key away a long time ago. So, enjoy.
