For those who have gone through the experience, is it better to use a Immigration attorney or one of these all inclusive K-1 Visa websites for the most efficient and effective service?

Unless you are strapped for time, then don't get an attorney. Lawyers screw it up more times than naught.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Most of us here did it ourselves, with a little help and advise from our VJ friends.

It's really not that hard to do.

The choice depends on several factors, one being can you afford it. The best immigration attorney will help you organize the data you need to submit but beyond that there isn't much difference from self help sites like VJ. It boils down to being able to understand the process and organize the data for submission. If you choose an attorney find one that specializes in it and has worked with many fiancee types and married applications. There is no reason to find one in your area since things are all done by mail anyway. So, if you choose an attorney find the best for the best price. However, if you think there might be a problem with your case, then an attorney might be the best choice.

Depends on how many violent felony convictions you have or have many other K-1 marriages that ended up in divorce you have had or if you have a shady past involving international espionage.....

,,,,,,if the answer is yes, then an attorney may help....

.....if no, then do it yourself and save a bunch of money. The documents are easier than one is lead to believe.

If you want to act as the man (and husband) is expected to act in a relationship with an FSU woman, you better do it yourself or else.

Yes that is a true statement......using an attorney or visa website will be the most efficient and effective way on two regards:

1. You will be parted with your money.

2. The overall time will be extended.

You can take these two to the bank if you use one of the two listed. That is a fact.

K-1 is pretty much a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) deal, because everything else is a HUGE waste of money...

If you just follow the guides on VJ, you'll put together a package that will include everything that's needed.

I did it myself. College applications are more complicated. Seriously?

Yes do it yourself. Just make sure you check everything 3 times over. I had a few copies of every document I had to deal with and everything was neatly organized in folders and binders. Pretty much everything I needed to know in order to fill out the documents I found here on this site. Tons of help here.

a: i would only recommend an attorney if, and only if there are legal issues that may hinder the process. deportation, criminal, and various other histories that may throw up red flags. you could at least consult a lawyer, there are some that'll give you advice for free. find them on www.aila.org. if you can do it yourself, then do it yourself.

b: if you're too lazy (this is probably the dumbest excuse ever from anybody) or you are too busy, or skeptical about your ability to compile the entire packet to send to USCIS, then i would recommend a K-1 service. they are significantly cheaper than attorneys and would be "good enough" to handle your case. assuming the petitioner/beneficiary do not have some crazy history that may trouble the process. if you can do it yourself, then do it yourself.

c: if you can do it yourself, then do it yourself.

This is the most circumspect reply in this thread. We don't (and can't) know the intricate details of the OP's situation.

*** Thread moved from RUB subforum to General Immigration Discussion -- OP's question applies generally and he hasn't yet embarked on a visa path. ***

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Echoing everyone else's sentiments, yes, there should be no need for an attorney. Believe it or not the USCIS site has most of the instructions you'll need, then VJ fills in the details you'd never think about.

The attorney really will probably help you only if you're feeling lazy and don't want to read the instructions yourself...and even then, you'll still have to give the attorney the documents he/she needs, so there's still work required on your part.

I was just at my wife's N-400 interview and an older guy sitting behind us (he looked like one of the applicants' grandfathers; he was dishing out lots of advice) commented on the few couples coming in with lawyers: "Those guys have great jobs! They get paid even though their clients still might be denied their green cards or naturalization certificates!"

Whichever way you choose, I wish you the best of luck :)
