So far he has been accepted to [...] University of Houston!
If you come here for that visit, you'd better hobnob with the locals this time, with plenty of advance notice, see man. No more sneaking in & out, no man.

Texas Aggie (A&M) jokes:

How did the Aggie break his leg raking leaves?

He fell out of the tree.

Why do Aggies keep their university diplomas on their car dashboards?

So they can park in the Handicapped zones.

Three Texas Aggies were arguing about some tracks.

"They're deer tracks," said one.

"No, they're moose tracks," said the second.

"No, no -- they're rabbit tracks," said the third.

They were still arguing when the train hit them.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Classic Aggie jokes! I told them to Sergey. Why? Because he had a "better offer" from LSU (in terms of $$$) and I begged him to go to Rice (I could be a biased Texican) and told him all the Aggie jokes and then told him...

"When an Aggie flunks out he can go to LSU and raise the GPA of BOTH schools!"

He went with Rice, but I do not think that was the reason.

So now we have another reason to visit Texas, to check out U of H and visit Sergey & Dasha. We are planning for Spring Break and we promised ourselves to discuss it this weekend and maybe buy tickets...Alla has a big exam Monday, though, which means she will be locked in her office all weekend and the planning may get delayed. She is a serious student

I will let you know our plans this time. Seriously, last time we were there for such a short time and had so much to do we would not have had time for anything else. We are hoping to be a little less hurried this time

Sweet, thanks!!

I agree that Rice has a better reputation than LSU, but I could be biased as I received my undergrad. from the Univ. of Mississippi.

In his field, Rice was much higher ranked than LSU and that is what he went with. I don't think it was the Aggie jokes. He translated the $$$ offers into "tickets to Russia to visit Dasha" but solved that problem by workigj with Dasha to get her a student visa and a PhD scholarship at University of Houston. Bring the mountian to Mohammed, I think they call that. Now they BOTH have a stipend and no travel costs.

Of course he needs help to understand how to assemble a hamburger.

I bet he learns real quick to make a hamburger if Dasha decides she loves hamburgers! It is amazing what we will do for your significant others.

Alla will tell you that Dasha is the problem (absolving herself, of course  ) because he always "has a woman to do everything for him". Dasha would assemble the hamburger with only the condiments he likes and deliver it to him at his computer desk. Wearing heels and a short skirt. The Russian way. I, on the other hand, say "Burgers are ready!" and leave everything on the counter to be assembled as one sees fit. The American way. He is a rocket scientist, not a chef.

This kid just sounds lazy to me

Sounds like just an ignorant statement to me.

Sergey is 21 years old, began school at one of the top universities in the world when he was 15. FIFTEEN years old. That's before kids have a drivers permit. He earned a master's degree in Physics from MIPT with straight A's, a full paid scholarship at Rice University for a Doctorate in Physics, works unloading trucks at night in a supermarket during school breaks and speaks, reads and writes four languages fluently. (Russian, Ukrainian, English, and German) How many languages, degrees, jobs and scholarships do most "lazy kids" have?

Seems strange that a person needs to come into a perfectly civil thread and toss foul language personal insults at people's children. How does that sound to you? How do you think it sounds to others? And then when the foul language is removed, come BACK and hurl the insult again...minus the foul language. That's bizarre.

Why would someone do that? It is not something I would do in, say, the Canadian or UK forum...go there and say someone's child sounds lazy? Using langage so foul it is against TOS. Seriously? What kind of life would I have to be lacking to do something like that? Insulting someone's children with vulgar language? Are you off to other regional sub-forums now to insult Muslims, Orientals, Africans, South Americans and use foul language against their children?

There must be something seriously wrong. Seriously. Wrong.

Well someone who expects a woman to wait on them sounds lazy to me.

And good job to Alla's sons for doing so well in their academic lives.

Also...I was not trying to be mean at all. I would say that to anyone who said the same thing about a kid. Male or female.

Apology accepted.

I plead guilty to being spoiled by FSU women. I only made the hamburgers because Alla was in Ukraine and left Sergey and I here to fend for ourselves, otherwise she would have been bringing both of us our lunch.

No doubt the boys, who will be very successful, will marry FSU women. They discover new reasons to everyday. But we are a country of immigrants, are we not?

Thanks.

What if they were Oriental asian?

Actually one of the best things for the boys about moving to the US and being exposed to our US culture is that it greatly increased the liklihood they would marry FSU women.

please be aware of the more modern usage of that word:

"Oriental" is believed by some to be antiquated, pejorative, and disparaging due to its Eurocentric usage in the United States.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orient

Urban Dictionary: oriental

1. oriental Politically incorrect term used in place of "Asian." Correct usage should be an adjective for things like inanimate objects, not humans.
