Why do youths in cars play loud music in public?

that is to say, that it gives the people sitting in a parking lot a feeling of power to subject an environment to their individual taste in music. that it is a primitive dominance behaviour, like a lion roaring on the plain? let's look at this from a sociological perspective.

Possibly. Are there any studies that would suggest this is the case? Maybe you could design an experiment, if you're into sociology.

I could see how it could be perceived that way, but it's not perception that's important for your hypothesis. It's the music listener's psychological reasons for doing this. We could be interpreting their behavior incorrectly if we don't look into it a little deeper.

Though both scenarios (roaring lion and music blaster) seem to carry the same results, they may be done for different purposes.

When I drive up on one of these fellas, I drop my windows and blow some Mozart at the same level.

My old Volvo wagon was retrofitted with a stereo system that matches, or is louder, than theirs

Why do people in general do the things they do? Why do people talk loudly or use their cell phones in movie theaters? Why do some people park like assh*les and take up two spaces? Why do some people bring 20 items up to the "10 Items or Less" line?

Simple answer: some people are obnoxious.

I love when I'm merging onto the highway, and clearly have my turn signal on indicating that I need to merge, and the idiot in the lane I want in decides to drive FASTER so I can't get in. Always awesome.

We never had sub woofers the size of a small house when I was a kid. The ones that make everything within 50 yards shake like an earthquake.

Back in the mid 90's a Honda car full of Pacific Islanders is all I'l say would drive through the neighborhood and past my bedroom window in their Honda car around 1 am like clock work with their ####### cranked up so that my windows would rattle. After a week of that ####### I put a few choice rocks out on the front deck and waited in the living room for them to drive by. I tossed a rock when they just started passing the house and nailed their back window. When they jumped out of the car I introduced them to Mr. S&W .44 mag Kodiak Special. I never had that problem with their music again.

Yeah that's why I quit bothering with the turn signal when merging. Apparently in this country it's an indication for the person in the other lane to speed up and block you from merging.

I like the India way. No lanes. All the bumpers say "Horn Please OK" They seem to drive by sound there rather than sight. I remember being in a hotel car that picked me up from the airport. The driver aciidentally hit some guy on a motorbike. The driver wanted to stop to see if everything was ok, and a cop ran over and said "whay are you stopping!!?? Keep moving!!"
