I think both are factors in a child's development, but the major reason children succeed is primarily due to the quality of their education. The single mother/father cannot be everything to their child. It's important to have love and perspective from two parents. Sometimes a lack of a parent can contribute towards a greater risk of sub-par behavior and performance.

Though, the greater cause of ignorance (in ethics, morality, logic, etc.) is the lack of a good education. When you don't think you can do better you end up in crime, or settling for something you hate. Education should get a huge boost in spending. We need a higher number and better quality of educators! How else can we expect to make things better? People need to start caring about education and place a greater emphasis on it.

Wife is a teacher (very proud of her) and I see how a good teacher can change the lives of their students all of the time! Wish I could brag more, but I can say that the US needs more teachers who care and have an aptitude for it like her. They also need a pay raise. They do not get paid near enough for the amount of work they do! Even with summers and Christmas vacation.

When you do not give education its proper due, you cannot expect to reap an intelligent generation.

You can quad triple the amount of money thrown at US school districts and it's not going to help the kids at home watching their single parent shoot up heroin or smoking meth.

US violent crime rate is off the hook. Work on fixing society and when I say that I'm not talking about throwing more welfare money at those people, I'm talking about them having some morals and ethics. Family core is very important along with using drugs, getting knocked up when your 14, holding up convenience stores, participating in gang like beatings with other teenagers of defenseless people while filming it with a smart phone and then uploading it onto youtube. It starts at home.

How are they going to get a better education when they are going home to a crime ridden infestation? You have any idea how many kids these days end up being raised by their grandparent(s)? A ####### load. Society is totally messed up these days and ya children of single parent families have it worse than mom and dad families according to the statistics. Society in the US sucks. Take a trip to a civilized country, spend some time there and then come back to this institution.

US schools get a ####### load of money and then they proceed to screw it away. Iv'e worked on a few schools in regards to construction and from what I saw it was a total hose job. School districts spending big bucks on art ####### outside the school that ran into the millions. There are high schools in Texas that have football stadiums that run up to $60+ million dollars in cost...that's for a high school football stadium.

Lack of funding eh? Our school systems get mucho bucks, it's what's done with that money that's another story. When schools are paying premium price for Macbooks for children instead of going with a Windows version that's half the price that right there says something. You should google what kids in other countries get and what they do with it.

They can get a better education when they have a higher number of higher quality teachers who care. Yes, I don't live in a bubble, Bad Daddy. I understand you believe high schools waste money. I would like to know all of the facts on those stadiums, though. Do they sell tickets to make up for the money spent on it? Do these sports help education?

Either way, it doesn't change the fact that the system is skimping on teachers. And they need to spend more money to do so.

Now, if a school should cut on sports or music, etc.? That's a different (but related) topic.

I'm no rocket scientist but I'm pretty sure there's a tie in with the drug use in the US, violent crimes committed by children, against children, in and out of US schools, and single parent families not to mention the ####### load of non English speaking students that are starting to burden school districts. The LA public school district is by far the largest in the US yet it's going broke at a record rate. Part of that is due to having to pay premium price for bi lingual teachers seeing how a large part of those students don't speak a lick of English.

Just like throwing money at the welfare crowd...the same bunch who will never work a legit job and it has been going on for generations now. Waste of money until you fix their way of thinking. Priorities first.

Also, if you needed tools to do your job properly, would you get your employer to pay for it or would you have to pay for it? Teachers are constantly having to use their own money (they hardly get anything to begin with) to pay for these things. Things like teaching aids and supplies to help them teach their children.

How would you suggest we get better teachers? You take away their money, you take away their incentive. Though some (including my wife) care enough to stick it out even if they hardly get paid anything.

The community voted on it. They wanted to spend their money on it. Of course the school isn't going to say no.

Anyways, that's beside the point. I firmly believe education can be a medium by which society and children can be cured of ignorance. Of course, being a Christian man, I also realize the importance of families. But man, until you watch a teacher for a week to understand what they have to work with, you just cannot realize how under-appreciated and under-paid/under-funded they are. I'm out for today. exactly this. bad_daddy your tax money is going to schools near you for the most part and school districts operate with elected officials. if things are so horrible, maybe get involved in the operation. try to fix the problem instead of blaming this group or that group..
