On G-325A for my foreign fiancee, it asks for her Social Security Number. She applied for SSN when she got here on a J1 visa. However the SS card never arrived, even now after her program ended and she went back to her home country.

Does anybody know what to do in this situation? Thanks.

Due to security measures recently put in place to prevent identity theft; SSA will no longer provide an SSN over the phone when an individual telephones to obtain his or her SSN.

Requests from outside the United States can be made at American embassies or consulates having a Federal Benefit Units (FBU) with individuals specially trained to provide a full range of Social Security related services.

In countries that do not have a trained FBU, the embassy or consulate may be forward the request to the nearest country having a trained FBU.

The VARO in Manila, Philippines is responsible for Vietnam:

Social Security Division

Veterans Affairs Regional Office

American Embassy

1131 Roxas Boulevard

Ermita 0930 Manila

Philippines

Phone: 63-2-528-6300, extensions 6302, 2621

Fax: 632-522-1514

e-mail:SSAD.VARO.Manila@ssa.gov

She will need to provide enough personal information, i.e. full name, date of birth, place of birth, parent's names, so that SSA can search their records for the number. She will need to provide proof of identification, i.e., passport.

If she has been assigned an SSN the VARO can provide it to her.

Thanks a lot for this information. Can she do this over the phone, i.e., call to the Embassy in the Phillipines?

She don't need to enter any SSN at all. I had a SSN and didn't enter it in the paperwork cause I didn't know it was valid. She can go to the Office as soon as she is with you and bring the paperwork in so the people there can look for the number.

Did you just put "None" there? May I ask what type of visa did you have before K1?

Also, in your original I-129F package, did you submit any documents at all with regards to your previous status in the US? I mean, things like copy of visa page, I-20 for F1, DS-2019 for J1, etc.?

Thanks a lot.

I didn't put my old social down on the paper work also as i didn't know it was still valid. I had it when I was on a J1 VISA.

There was no problem with this (Maybe its common).

When I went to get a new SSN they put in my alien number and then said I already had a number assigned (My old SSN).

I then used this for AOS without any problems.

I was also on a J1 visa and I put "None" in the box, not knowing that my SSN was actually still valid.

I actually did not send any copies of my J1 and the DS2019 with the initial I129F package but I got a letter from the consulate in Germany asking me to send copies of the visa and the DS and also they wanted to know what agency I was in the US with and who sponsored it (noone did, since I did an Aupair year, wihich I payed all by myself).
