I'm in Chicago on a J1 visa and it says on my SSN card "valid for work only with DHS authorisation" and lately I've gotten a job but not sought the authorisation. What are the possible reprecussions of this? Will my visa sponsor automatically become aware of this?

If the employer does their job correctly of verifying your work status via the I-9 form, you will be terminated from the job as you do not have the proper documentation to work LEGALLY and complete the I-9 form. The next question I would ask myself is, since it is ILLEGAL to work in the US without proper authorization what could happen? From loosing the job, to loosing the J-1 visa and being asked to leave the US and maybe incurring a bar as you failed to abide by the laws of the US--I am sure getting a tourist visa in the future will be next to impossible. Am I trying to scare you, yes I am as you are playing with fire just for a job. Ask yourself if it is worth the risks. Then I hope you choose wisely.

By working in the US illegally (and just because the employer didn't check does not make your work legal) is jeopardizing your future in the US

Why can't you obey our laws? You were given an object of trust (the J1 visa) and the rules are simple, so....please....follow them....
