Not completely sure what the trouble is...

I charged Lufthansa flights (eTickets) to my credit card. Had to call them on the phone however as web site wanted credit card in her hand to confirm. Calling let me tell them to use passports to confirm ID.

It appears that Aeroflot's website is a reservation website only and payments for all bookings need to be made at any of the Aerflot's ticketing offices.

YMMV

Something similar happened to me. What I had to do was call them and make a reservation over the phone, then fax in a CC authorization form with number and security code on it. Then they charged it to my CC. So, just call their New York office and make a telephone reservation, and have a fax on stand-by. No fax? No problem.... Kinkos.

Edited: When you call to make the reservation, they hold the seat for her, so you're good to go there, she's guaranteed that seat, pending your payment. So you'll have the flight info and dates/times already.

Aeroflot is the pits.

Since my first trip to see my fiancee, I've used Lufthansa (and other carriers that are Star Alliance partners) and have amassed 70k FF miles. Lufthansa is great but their fares are often higher than most others and on a few trips I received only 1/2 mileage credit because I had some obscure booking code.

I'm going to burn up the Lufthansa miles for award tickets in the Spring and switch to a new carrier/FF program. Since Delta flies nonstop from JFK to SVO, I bought a one-way ticket for Dec. 15 (I'll return a few days later with my fiancee).

But sometimes I wonder if it's even worth the bother to be loyal to an airline because of FF miles. For a "free" flight, Lufthansa charges me $250 in taxes and fees...

I've traveled quite extensively for the last 10 years and have found that it's almost impossible to use those FF miles. Or you have to use so many it's not even worth it. The two free flights that I got to go to Russia were the most screwed up routes I have ever taken. About 4 connections on each one. The flights are usually only $1000 which is well worth it for me to get there sooner. I've still got 250k miles and dont even try to use them. Loyalty will get you nowhere.

I used my SkyMiles from Delta to get Elena's ticket from Vladivostok to Moscow. (VVO-SVO) They charged me $10 for the booking fee.

Remember, a free domestic flight doesn't always mean domestic in the U.S., it can also mean domestic Russia.

And for anyone not getting SkyMiles or whatever on their credit card, I highly recommend getting the AMEX from Delta. You'll earn miles pretty fast, and they're very easy to use.

Good idea, and without your free tix she might have been stuck flying on S7 or one of those other dreadful domestic carriers.

I've had better experience here. I used 70K Alaska Airlines miles to fly on British Airways from Seattle to Moscow. It was a reasonable flight, ANC-SEA, SEA-Heathrow, change planes, Heathrow-DME. On the return flight I had to overnight in London. Overall, 70K miles to get from Anchorage to Moscow and back was pretty good I thought, esp. considering I had a one-classs-ove-coach ride on the BA flights.

I also recently used Alaska Airlines FF miles to fliy free, two tickets from Anchorage to DC and back for $40K miles. Over the summer, we got two tickets to LA and back, for 40K miles. You just have to be flexible.

The best use of airlines miles I've ever when I (long story here) was in Boston and had to walk up to the counter and buy a same-day round-trip ticket from Boston to Anchorage and back. The price was $1700, but I was able to use 40,000 Alaska Airlines FF miles intstead. (:

Cheers!

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

Exile.ru ROCKS!!!! If you guys haven't stumbled upon this site yet, definitely go there and waste a few hours laughing at the funny (albeit, mostly fact-based) stories. They also have a plethora of knowledge on Russia/Russians. Excellent source for info prior to, and during your trip to the Motherland.

And for some reason.... S7 makes me want some juice. Those planes with the S7 logo look suspiciously like the J7 juice box. Maybe they saw the same add I did with the hot chick drinking juice and thought, "hey, let's go with the green and red and instead of J7, we'll call it S7. " That seems completely possible in a 9:00 AM meeting after a long night at Safari.

The Exile is outstanding. I'd also recommend picking up a copy of the book, The Exile: Sex, Drugs, and Libel in the New Russia.

Slim, you've made me nostalgic for shopping at one of the many kiosks along Moscow's streets, where row upon row of J7 and Baltika beers beckon. I like how there are so many different fruit juices in Russia compared to here, where we're stuck with orange/apple/cranberry and not much else.
