Hello everyone . I'm sorry if this is not the right topic to ask this question.

I've a question on my mind which bugs me nowadays. Let me tell you about it .

I'm getting married with my girlfriend this summer. I'm on F-1 visa.

I remember reading to become a permanent resident, you have to live in the state for a specific period of time .

How long does it take to become a resident (not citizen) after someone gets married ?

I mean does it affect anything if I go out of the country for a trip before I make any applications for AOS or anything like that?

I've not got enough information about the process since I'm not married yet but I hope my questions make sense .

I'd be happy if you can share your opinions . Thank you .

Hey there:

So, in terms how how long you have to live in a certain state to become a resident depends on the state. In some states, even if you got your green card, you need 2 years to live in the state before being able to become a resident, in others it is shorter. Really, this varies by states. But just by getting the green card in your hand will not give you a resident of the state you are residing at the time when you get your green card. Previous years before your green card does not count as that time you were a "non-resident alien". If you go out of the country before AOS but already married then you might going to get denied for re-entry. It shows intent of immigration while F1 student visa is a non-immigrant visa where one has no intention of immigrating to the US. If you leave US and come back BEFORE you're married you're safe, as simply you're just visiting home and returning to continue your studies. Well, some people may have a better info here, but this is what I think, and I'm not 100% confident, so don't heavily rely on my info. All the best!

My husband became a resident of my state the day he got his green card. His residency became effective based on the length of my residency. Thus, he now has in-state tuition rates because I have been a resident for years. We had to show our marriage certificate and proof of the length of my residency to the school, but it was a relatively straightforward procedure.
