'Borat': Is he hilarious, or just offensive?

Despite 'Borat,' Kazakhs seek stronger ties with Israel

As Jewish British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's mockumentary about fictional

Kazakh TV reporter Borat rocketed to No. 1 in the US box office Friday, taking in

more than $9 million in a limited release, the Central Asian nation's deputy prime

minister, Karim Massimov, finished up a week-long round of diplomatic and business

meetings in Israel aimed at increasing cooperation between the countries.

Cohen's mother is Israeli, but the irony of Massimov's visit to the Jewish state in

light of the controversy surrounding Cohen's satiric film, Borat: Cultural Learnings

of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, seemed lost on local

and international journalists, who were content to report on how Kazakh oil funds

would be invested in projects in Israel and in the Middle East.

The fact that such a high profile movie portrays Kazakhstan as a nation of anti-Semites

who rank women lower than donkeys and drink fermented horse urine seemed to

be overlooked.

"Kazakhstan is an oil rich country and it is willing to cooperate more strongly with

Israel and other countries in the Middle East," said Massimov. He met with Prime

Minister Ehud Olmert, Deputy Premier Shimon Peres and other high-ranking

government officials and business people.

He said the relationship between Israel and Kazakhstan was "complimentary," adding

that this cooperation should increase.

Massimov said he had come "with a clear message from the president that

Kazakhstan was a moderate Muslim country that can offer a positive model to the

Middle East."

Olmert agreed, saying that the former Soviet republic was a good example of a

moderate Islamic nation.

"Kazakhstan can show a beautiful face of Islam," Olmert said. "Contemporary,

ever-developing Kazakhstan is a perfect example of both economic development

and interethnic accord that should be followed by more Muslim states."

The stir surrounding Cohen's comic take on Kazakhstan has fallen short of a major

diplomatic incident. In the past few months, leading up to the film's release, Kazakh

officials have told journalists that the London-born comedian had overstepped the

boundaries of humor and caused irreparable damage to Kazakhstan's image.

Foreign Minister Kasymzhomart Tokayev told the Bild German newspaper last week

that the movie lampooned his country in an unacceptable manner. "Apart from the

name of our country and our flag, it has nothing to do with us. I also hope the people

in your country will not laugh at us, but that the film will arouse their interest. They

should come to our country and get to know the real Kazakhstan," Tokayev said.

In September, Cohen was turned away from the White House when, dressed as his

Borat character, he tried to invite "Premier George Walter Bush" to a screening of

the movie, according to Reuters. The comedian's stunt was timed to coincide with

an official visit by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Kazakhstan's foreign ministry recently ran ads on CNN and in The New York Times

and the International Herald Tribune trying to raise the country's profile and to assure

the West that, contrary to Borat's claims, theirs is not a nation of drunken anti-Semites.

Deputy Foreign Minister Rakhat Aliyev even asked Cohen to visit Kazakhstan to see

for himself that his comical skits were completely baseless. "I'd like to invite Cohen

here," he said in an interview in Kazakhstan Today. "He can discover a lot of things.

Women drive cars, wine is made of grapes, and Jews are free to go to synagogues."

On Saturday, AFP reported that Kazakhstan's ambassador to Britain, Erlan Idrissov,

grudgingly admitted that the Borat film had put his country in the world spotlight.

Source: Jerusalem Post

Kazakhstan is a country of minirities..only about 45% are Kazakhs and the Jewish population and israel is respected...that is one of the sore spots for the kazakhstan government ..about Borat....

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I have not seen the movie, but a guy that appears in the movie as a driving instructor is from Maryland and he was interviewed on the radio this morning.

He said that he had to sign a release to let them use him in the movie and he felt they misrepresented what they were doing to get him to sign. He also said that a lot of what went on was not included in the movie. He said the guy was talking about Jews, i.e. "aren't those Jews really cheap" and women the whole time while in the car hoping that he would take the bait.

This guy sounds like a one trick pony that will hopefully go the way of other no talents.

Well I saw it today. I may be in the minority here. I thought the start was very promising but it went downhill from there on. As I said before, I felt it was too predictable and subtlety went right out the window. Most of the ideas were from his original UK and HBO shows so there were no surprises about what was going on. The scene in the church was pure Louis Theroux documentary. Already done, and much funnier and fascinating the first time around. He had also changed his accent so it was easier to understand...not very convincing at all. It was also obvious that so many people were in on his jokes. Either that or they were really quite ignorant. C'mon, Pammy was in on it all. It's called PR and having the right agents, people!

We saw "Borat" this weekend and just about died laughing. The wrestling scene will go down as one of the all-time funniest.

It was also obvious that so many people were in on his jokes. Either that or they were really quite ignorant. C'mon, Pammy was in on it all. It's called PR and having the right agents, people!

Certainly Pam was in on the joke, and so was the "lady" he invited to the high dining society, but pretty much everyone else he interviewed was oblivious.

I thought the driving instructor came off quite well! "Borat" was making misogynistic statements and the instructor was correcting him about how things work here for "sexy time".

I have not made up my mind yet because I have not seen it but most things like this I find borderline offensive/humorous. The problem is when satire replaces understanding and discovery. Do you really think the majority of people who see this film walk out and say I wonder what people from that country are really like, probably not but the next time they here someone with a similar accent make a mistake with the english language watch them bust out laughing.

Some might say if you dont get it you never will and that might be but just because someone doesnt get it does not mean their point about it being offensive is not valid. Or more likely they do get it but it is not their type of humor so they look at it from a different perspecitve.

I will see it to find out for myself but I have to admit I am predesposed to find it offensive. At least I admit my bias...hehe

He did the dining etiquette scene on his series years ago. I think back then they were oblivious. It produced a great result so he did it again for the film. There is no way a woman like that would have reacted so calmly to his sh*t in a bag. The rodeo scene was a repeat, but it was a ball game before; same with falling over in the shop, but before it was on a running machine and WAY funnier; same with the pictures, but they were of his wife not his son, blah blah. There were so many repeats it was like watching Bravo TV. We need a yawning smilie here. ;)

That was the funniest part of the film. No one in the cinema got it. We were the only ones laughing.
