Getting and American ID

Hi everyone! Long story short:

To get an American ID now after we are married, do I only need say a bank statment, SSC card and my birth certificate?

Thing is my bank won't let me open an account in my married name since I don't have any ID (except my SSC card) with my marriedname yet, so my bank statement will be with my maiden name.

I'm just a little confused and hoping someone wiser can shed a little light on this.

Thank you so much!

There is no such thing as "American ID" (except for a passport, but you're obviously not eligible for that).

IDs and Driver's Licenses are issued by the states, more specifically by DMVs.

Your ability to get the DL or ID will depend on which state are you living in, but most states require at least EAD card to issue one.

You can ask at your local DMV about requirements.

Thank you, I meant a form of ID issued in America when I was talking about an American ID. Such as a state ID you can get at the DMV.

So I have to wait to get my EAD to get an ID then?

Thank you both for the quick reply!

You really have to check with your local DMV. Requirements vary by state but most require EAD or GC to issue the ID or DL.

Maybe you should also consider contacting Swedish embassy/consulate and check with them what would be required (and how long would it take) to get a new passport in your married name.

There are oil sheiks who have bank accounts in Geneva, Stockholm, London, Lichtenstein, New York, and Paris . . . guys who have never even set foot on US soil. Banking has NOTHING to do with immigration. What you'll need is your Swedish passport, nothing else. If you encounter a bank employee with the brain power of a sodomized snail, ask for the manager or go to another bank. I have, personally, opened at least 12 or 13 US bank accounts for tourists who have nothing but their passports.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Try a different bank. I opened an account with my Australia passport in my maiden name, and then when I got married I just used my marriage certificate to change the account to my new name. No need for a photo ID in my new name. So you should be able to use just your passport with your old name and the marriage certificate to get the account in your new name.

Bring your marriage certificate(a copy of it), passport and ssn to a bank, say you'd like to open up a checking account with them.

Don't apply online, you'd be better of walking into the bank. I opened one at Centier and with 5/3 before having EAD or greencard. Horizon was also fine with only my ssn, marriage cert. to prove name change and then passport however I thought 3 accounts would be overkill.

Good luck.
