It wouldn't take long. Just 2 generations of 1.59 babies/woman across the world (assuming # men =(approx) # women) would see a population decrease by 20% in the second generation.

you're comparing the u.s. national average to the rest of the world. the world average for 2012 is 19.14 per 1,000 people.."this rate results in about 252 worldwide births per minute or 4.2 births every second" http://www.indexmundi.com/world/birth_rate.html

we are no where near dwindling out of existence due to lack of breeding..

I'm not comparing anything. I know the rest of the world has a different rate.

You said, "the population of the planet would not dwindle to nothing if every woman had on average two kids. we would be more capable of improving the quality of life for the living and more focused on curtailing unnecessary loss of life."

The response of the person I was responding to in the quote of me you used was a response that if the world only had a birth rate of 1.59 babies/women, it would take a hell of a long time for the population to dwindle. My argument was that it would not.

So, I'm not saying that the population will dwindle. I said that if we applied the micro (1.59) to the macro, then it would dwindle.

I don't know if that will ever happen, though.

Hopefully the rest of the world will have a different mindset (pertaining to children) than that of western culture. If they don't, then the population will certainly dwindle. That was my point.
