I called USCIS and after waiting an hour and 4 minutes I got the nicest guy on the phone. I gave him my information and asked him if he could please tell me anything about my case whether I've been assigned to an officer or if I am still waiting. He asked me to hold and after a few more minutes he told me a few applications around my date before and after have already been assigned to officers but that I have not been assigned to anyone yet. I asked if I can please have a service request he told me he will type one up for me. Then he gave me a reference number it was a 10 digit number beginning with ETC and ending with VSC. He told me that I should receive a notice in the mail in about 15 days telling me the details of my case. Is that a service request? Also what does a service request really do?

Thank you!

Sounds like it to me!

PS - You're so lucky. I'm Canadian (low risk), have been married to my wife for over 3 years, and have been waiting almost 6 months and they still will not let me file a request. Seems almost unfair.

That isn't fair. It seems as though the guy I had just really wanted to end the call so he said yes and wanted to move on. My friend was denied a service request about 3 times maybe you should try again. I really hope you get it.

It did not help my case! Hopefully you will be luckier!

Oh no! I hope you aren't still waiting.

Thank you!

A service request is to start a inquiry into the status of your case and report back to you where it is. Does it get you approved faster. Some say yes, I have read some request a service request and it seems they fell in to the black hole. Since you were so nice and pleasant here's praying you touched the man and you will see approved soon.

Yup, that is a service request.

The ISO I dealt with, last month, called it a service referral.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.
