Who sponsors me in i-864 for my AOS?

I'm filling out the I-864 right now as part of my AOS package and I'm confused about it.

WHo exactly sponsors me? I am the one that is in need of an AOS. My wife (who is an American citizen) was unemployed for about a year and lived off unemployment insurance. Since about 8-10 months ago, her income has been low and prior to being on unemployment it wasn't too high either. What I'm getting is that I believe she might not be qualified enough to "support" me based on her income tax filings, then again I am unsure of the qualifications.

Does it have to be my wife that sponsors me? Could it be her mother with a good income or my parents who are Canadians living in the US on a work visa?

Your spouse is always the primary sponsor regardless of income. If their income is insufficient then a joint sponsor will be required; this can be anyone in the country (who is a green card holder or a US citizen) that has a sufficient income.

Thanks for the help.

So would I need to file the joint sponsor at the same time or will this be something they require should they determine if my wife is not a qualified financial sponsor?

If your wife's income is below 125% poverty level for your family size, line up the co-sponsor right now and send both I-864s.

Thanks I'll look that information up.

I'm having a bit of a math issue in Part 5, #21.

In 21.a it asks to enter the number I entered in line 10, which for us would be 1 right (my wife is sponsoring me)?

in 21.b "1" is already marked off for "yourself"

and in 21.c it asks "if you are married, enter "1" for your spouse, so I put 1.

in 21.h it asks to add all the numbers together and that gives us 3, but we should be 2 since it's me and my wife. I feel like it's double counting the spouse... unless I am doing something wrong.
