Hello All,

I am asking this question for a friend that is starting the CR-1/IR-1 process. Any suggestions on how would the Petitioner (Naturalized Citizen) go about getting a certified true copy of their marriage certificate and petitioner's birth certificate that is from Eygpt?

Thank you all in advance.

Toni

It depends where they are. If they're here let them call the Egyptian Embassy in New York and they would help them formally with what to do on both those processes and they may be able to help them finish it in the States. If they became a naturalized American citizen they are still recognized as an Egyptian citizen and they may get more help from the Egyptian Embassy that knows the in's and out's. I'm not sure about the American Embassy being able to help with this.

As far as I know they should have two copies of their marriage certificate from the time they were married in Egypt. If they are both Egyptian's that were married in Egypt they'd call the office that notarized the ma-zoon (marriage certificate), because if they are both Egyptian they wouldn't need to go to the Ministry of Justice for their marriage. Otherwise if the marriage was between one Egyptian and a foreigner they'd have to inquire at the Ministry of Justice where only marriages to a foreigner are recognized legally. Unless it was an unofficial marriage such as an Orfi that was later legalized through a lawyer. Then they'd want to contact that lawyer for further information. You can find more information about Marriage in Egypt, where to go, ect from the US Embassy in Cairo's page at this Link.

They'd get the birth certificate from the place where they were born in Egypt. If they have the old one they can get the new one. Otherwise they'd have to get their Father and Mother's ID to prove that they are both Egyptians and go from there re-establishing, ect.

If they are in Egypt it is the easiest way. My husband had to get a certified copy of our marriage contract. He just went to the minstrey of Justice where we got married and they gave him a copy with all the stamps that was needed. As far as the birth certificate, if in Egypt no problem. But if they are in the states, will have to contact the Egyptian Embassy here in the states and they can get this info for you, for a fee and some time.
