I went to the Toronto Police. Took about a week to process, and cost me about $25, I think.

I submitted my info online, and then had to pick it up in person, with the same two pieces of ID that I used online (drivers license & passport, in my case)

http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/recordsmanagement/clearance.php <-- I think that's the link.

Shoot, does everyone require 2 forms of ID?

Or just because you did it online?

My husband has only (1) form of ID that isn't expired.

He often uses his fire arms card, but it expired 2 years ago and I think someone like the police would care about that lol.

Other than that, just a passport.

Most places will take a birth certificate as well. They'll normally take the little cards.

And some places will take my Alberta Health Care Card as ID as well and here they don't have pictures.

WHEW! We DO have that.

I was thinking of only picture IDs since that's something the US is usually sticklers about.

So, sorry, of course you wouldn't know, but my husband has the old SIN health card that has no picture on it.

I see yours doesn't have one on it either!

Did they make new ones in Alberta with pictures?

He needs to get his new one soon but hasn't wanted to because those ones expire and his old one doesn't.

But according to his mom, they, at some point, declared they wouldn't be accepted any more and he needs to get a new one.

I should really check into that. That's probably affordable.

I heard that American's were crossing over and using SIN cards (w/o pics) to get free healthcare. I blame that one documentary for showing that.

The Canadian Gov't was probably like GOTTA PUT A STOP TO THAT! PUT PICS ON EM!

They are not going to be making SIN cards at all in the future: http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/05/15/ottawa-phasing-out-sin-card-to-fight-identify-theft/ I think you actually talking about the old OHIP Health Card??

Alberta Health does not have pictures on our cards. They are just a crappy piece of paper.

I do agree that Canada has to do more to ensure that people who are no longer residents of Canada and no longer pay taxes stop using our Health Care system.

Yeah that irritates me - someone told me their sister in law who is a dual citizen living in the USA with her husband crosses the border to have her babies everytime since it's 'free' and then returns to the USA. I was like 'Uhhhh I thought you had to be living in Canada for a period of 3 months for healthcare to kick in again' and my friend gave me a confused look, saying 'I don't know, she just comes over to have her babies and then goes back' --- am I missing some kind of loophole here or is my friend's friend skirting illegality? Because if there IS a loophole that would be nice

If she's a resident of the USA then what she's doing is illegal and she can be fined up to $10,000 for it- no loopholes. Check any of the provincial health care sites and they'll say you have to be a resident. It doesn't matter if you're a citizen if you're not residing in Canada. There are exceptions like if you're traveling or in the military or something but you're still pretty much a resident of Canada in those cases.

It makes sense since if you're a resident if Canada you'll pay taxes and those taxes will go towards public health care.

Yep it goes on and it is illegal. BC said a few yrs back they were going to start cracking down on it--as it was costing thew province millions and millions $$$$$ each yr. No clue if they actually did! if Knew that was going on--I would have no qualms of making a few phone calls and alerting authorities!

I dont think there has ever been a picture on a Cdn SIN card.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

The military get insurance for outside Canada through PSHCP. They do get automatic coverage through provincial plans as soon as they are posted back into the country though with no wait period.

Found this article where a couple from Australia have a bill for $1M to give birth in BC: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2012/03/26/bc-australian-baby-bill.html

Most births don't cost that much but I hate people screwing the system like that dual-citizen.

Someone already corrected me. I meant a pic on the health card. I've only ever seen my husbands sin card so I assumed wrong

That poor couple! I would hardly call that duping the system though.

I felt very sorry for the Australian couple. I hope their government helps them out of their hole. I just posted that as an example of cost.

When I said screwing the system I meant people like that lady who crosses the border every time she wants to get birth even though she lives in the US and that type of thing.
