Hi

I'm preparing the DS-230 package and I have a few questions about certifications.

1. Any idea, how I certify in Israel? I did most of my certifications in Australia but I'm now in Israel and I'm not sure how to certify here...

2. Do I need to send the ORIGINAL police certificate or can I send a certified copy instead? If I need to send the original, will I get it back in the interview?

Thanks in advance

Ditto on both. You don't get police certificates back because they are only needed for the purpose they were submitted.

In general, you don't get documents certified. You simply obtain certified copies from the government agency that holds the original. If you'll be specific about the documents in question, we can be of more meaningful assistance.

For certified translations, the translator certifies their translation.

Thank you. The documents in question are:

Original/certified copy of beneficiary’s birth certificate.

Original/certified copy of beneficiary’s and petitioner’s marriage certificate.

Original/certified copy of military record, if applicable.

I only have originals and I don't really want to send them in case they get lost in mail. Is there anyone who can certify this instead of going directly to the government agencies? That might take long time to get them.

Also, we got married in Australia and we're not there anymore so I'm not sure how I can get a certified copy from that government agency again..

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot. really appreciate your help

I'll be watching this thread too as I don't feel comfortable with sending original document in the mail to NVC when it comes time for it...and was wondering what they mean by certification.

You send the originals of all three of the documents you mention. No, there is no way around this. Take regular photocopies to the interview to exchange for your originals and they will return them. Satisfy your concerns the best you can by using a reliable courier service.

The marriage and birth certificates are probably already "certified copies" not "originals". Originals are kept on file by the applicable government agencies. You order a specific military record for immigration purposes. You will not need this record again as it serves no other purpose.

Are you sure? Why does it say Original or certified copy then? I thought that meant you had a choice between the two and that the copy should be certified by the issuing agency. The problem isn't just papers getting lost in the mail it's also if they get lost by NVC for some reason...

We are going in circles. A certified copy is a copy issued by the government agency holding the original. You do not make copies and get them certified. You send either an original document (police report) or a certified copy of a document. Marriage and Birth Certificates are certified copies, so you send the actual certified copy to NVC, where you might have sent a photocopy of a certified copy of (for example a marriage certificate) to USCIS.

Again, you do not get copies certified. You obtain certified copies from the agency that has the original.
