TSA Approved luggage padlocks

Hi once again fellow members, I have a questions about using luggage padlocks.Is it necessary to use TSA APPROVED padlocks for checked - in baggage bound for US? OR regular padlocks will do? Are pastries allowed for hand carry?

As far as I know, no for the locks.

For the pastries, you should be fine.

I've gone back and forth too and I've used just the regular gold and/or silver locks, never questioned. Others might have different stories.

Yes and Yes, if TSA can't open locks they will cut them off. I never lock my bags. You can carry snacks in carry on.

That is right,sometimes it depends on the airline too.Usually at the security check staffs are lazy and impatient to wait till a passenger opens his/her luggage for checking if they notice something on the xray machine..YIKES ..hassle to us travelers..grrr

TSA don't just cut if off, if you have the keys. And even if you lost your keys, you just need a pen to split open the zippers.

are breads as pasalubong ok to put inside the carry on or it should be on the check in bag? im planning to buy a bunch of my fiance's fave bread from goldilocks

I have had TSA cut my locks on luggage that I had checked on a few different occasions when my bags were not in my presence and they left a note from TSA that they opened my luggage. They just put a zip tie on to secure it back. Of course this happened once in the US.

While our technology allows us to electronically screen bags, there are times when we need to physically inspect a piece of luggage. TSA has worked with several companies to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal "master" keys so that the locks may not have to be cut. These locks are available at airports and travel stores nationwide. The packaging on the locks indicates whether they can be opened by TSA.

My luggage is always locked and I have never had any problems. Don't know about the pastries, though.

My bag is always closed by some regular padlock and once it was opened by TSA, when I was traveling from LA to Europe. The padlock was closed back by TSA, so I became aware that it was opened only because I found a TSA note inside of my suitcase.
