I guess the reason why I am worrying so much about this, is because Craig and I have a border denial to explain. And I know that alone will make our interview much more difficult than most people's.

Blah, I need to take up yoga or something to calm myself.

Cass,

The border denial may, indirectly, be helpful in regard to the issue of this thread, although this issue is not often much of a concern when dealing with Canadians.

What was the background, the preceding experiences, of the border denial? Visiting too often or for too long? Or having the back of the car filled with suitcases and boxes?

Mostly ignorance on the part of us. He was planning on staying for 6 weeks, but we never even thought about needing to bring proof of any sort of ties to Canada. He lived at home (no lease or utilities), his job was temporary (he was coming back a the end of the summer, so technically unemployed/not on payroll), he neglected to bring any proof showing that he intended to come back to Canada. All aside from the fact that he had 6 weeks worth of clothes and me in the car.

Truthfully, knowing what I know now, I can see how they could see what they did. We just didn't have the experience or smarts to research it beforehand. I kick myself everyday for that one.

But, ever since that day, Craig has stayed in Canada, hasn't crossed or attempted to cross the border once.

The denial was pretty...lenient. The CBP officer was VERY nice to us. No fingerprints or photographing. He explained to us what are options were if we wanted to be together or spend time extended time together. He recommended that Craig reestablish intent to stay in Canada for a few months or until we were approved for a visa, which is what he's done. The CBP officer even ended up giving us his card and told us to call him if we ever have any questions. His exact words to us were "I want to let you in because I believe there is no malicious intent here, but if my boss saw this report and saw that I'd let you in, I'd be in trouble". While that may or may not be true, it provides me a little comfort.

When it comes to explaining it in the interview, we plan on bringing a letter from his employer indeed stating that he returned to work on the day we stated he was going to, also statements from his bank saying that his account was open and never inactive.

Prior to that denial, neither one of us had ever had a blip at the border before. He lived 45 minutes north of the border his whole life and they were down there multiple times a week, just to go get pizza or go to a movie. This was the first time he'd ever been even asked to get out of the car.

I know that in the grand scheme of border denials, it could be a million times worse (photographed, fingerprinted, banned, etc.), but it's still a very worrisome spot for me. And nearly impossible to find advice about. I'm hoping that we've been doing the right things to help heal the wounds.

My fiancé made me a memories album about a year ago that's really a lovely work of art. He includes pictures (only two of the two of us, but plenty of scenery from vacations), and apparently, the romantic fool has kept every movie ticket stub, every museum ticket, every 'date'-type activity we've ever had. He made the album because I was feeling sad that we didn't get to do a lot of 'real couple' things.

It's not a good proof of an ongoing relationship on its own for the reasons others have mentioned. It could be an elaborate hoax. But I think it makes a nice addition to the rest of our three years of telephone calls & primary evidence.

Caladan,

If it matches what the consular officer senses about your fiance's personality when they interview him it will be excelent evidence.

Sounds like you've got a 'keeper'.

Cass,

I know exactly how you feel, I have a border denial to explain too  And they cancelled my old Border crossing card that time too :o

I'm hoping they don't make a big deal of it and make me submit a waiver or deny my visa, since it happened 7 years ago and I got 2 new visas (B1/B2 & Student F1) only one month after that

He's pretty awesome.

And Cass, you should totally take up yoga. Good for relieving stress, and surprisingly great for developing rock-hard abs.
