Re- Entry to the US after 1 yr abroad

This question is actually for my mother....

She left to Dominican Republic September 23, 2011 to take care of her grandmother who was at the time very ill. Unfortunately, she passed away. A few months ago, my mother was assaulted and they stole her purse, in which her passport was in it. She is a permanent resident of the US. So my question is, when she arrives to POE, will they question her as to why does she have a new passport? And will they question her extended stay? Since she stayed a little over a year? Does she need a re-entry permit? Since her new passport doesn't have a stamp of when she arrived to the DR. I appreciate any answer given. I really do miss my mother, and I am scared that she might have lost her residency :help:

Lawful Permanent Residents who have been outside the U.S. more than 1 year cannot use their unexpired green card to re-enter unless they first go to the U.S. Consulate and get an SB-1 Returning Resident Visa and convince them that their stay abroad was beyond their control. This is the website I got this information from you may want to look over it and contact USCIS.

Agree that she has abandoned her LPR status. She will need to apply for an SB-1. You said her handbag was stolen a few months ago. If you can prove that it was stolen BEFORE the 1 year was up and it was due to applying for a new one that she was delayed... she might be okay. Otherwise yes, she has abandoned her status and will need to apply all over again.
