That never happens out here. Whole chicken never goes under $1 lb. I might see drumsticks or thighs on sale for .99. Ground beef is 2.99+, fruit is expensive as are fresh vegetables, especially in the winter. I don't think I could feed myself for $250 month unless I ate rice, beans and pasta every day. Throw in some milk, juice etc and the budget is gone.

LAst year I picked up a bunch of leg quarters at .49 a pound.

I would say 85% of my meat gets picked up in the quick-sale bin. Never been a coupon user, just not that organized

Even so I know for a fact, if my food budget went to the food stamp allotment we would buying more, not less.

Also like food stamp users I would be shopping more name brand stuff.

Cheap meat is disgusting and not fit for human consumption. It's a horrorshow. Arsenic apples from China, and non organic potatoes aren't much better. The Monsanto GMO diet is totally cheap and economical, even if you're buying whole foods and not processed, but I can't bring myself to eat that #######, much less feed it to growing children.

Watch this if you dare, You have no idea what has gone before you. The last thing my wifes great aunt lips in ChengDu China were "I wish I had a piece of meat to eat "before she died.

we no longer buy ground meat and haven't for two years. meatless crumbles work just as well for spaghetti, tacos, chili. at first i thought that it would be much more expensive but at around four dollars a pound it isn't nearly as bad as buying a pound of ground beef, cooking it, only to have it shrink down to next to nothing when all the grease and gristle and lard cook off.

Ukrainians eat the grease, gristle and lard also. :P Nothing goes to waste. Cheap meat makes better soup broth and gravy.

it started because i watched a documentary, i can't remember right now the name of it, but it detailed how grocery chains source their ground beef. it was quite disgusting. i simply can't buy or touch it anymore and since i do the cooking, i refuse..

but if you're looking for gristle in your ground beef - walmart's prepackaged tubes contain the bulk of it.

Thats why I don't watch those types of Documentaries, it'll just ruin your dinner.

I figure people are living longer than ever even despite sabotaging their own health so how bad can it be?

It's like when I go to a country with strange food.... why ask whats in it?

Smell it

has it been cooked?

Eat.

Cheap meat is produced under horrorshow conditions for animals that no sane, normal, human being with the faintest whiff of compassion could ever condone or participate in. Let alone have the stomach for how gross, dirty, and contaminated it is. Ingesting antibiotics via meat because that animal lived knee deep in ####### it's whole life is not wholesome.

But somehow the fact that there are people even hungrier around the world and more destitute means that poor people here should be happy with garbage because they just should be? Ok.

when it comes to our food sources and the current state of the farming industry in this country, i don't think that simply turning the other way is very smart. isn't that what you were arguing earlier - people don't know how to grow and cook their own food? but it's okay that we have mass farms producing nothing but corn and making the land inhospitable to more diverse crops - cue outsourcing..?

people are living longer despite sabotaging their own health because of advances in medicine, not the content of our diet.

you know willie nelson, farm aide ... farmers are kind of important.

We use venison instead of ground beef in recipes now. And that's really cheap for us as the venison is basically free.

We might get pigs and or goats next year to provide us with a good supply of meat. And we grow as many of our own vegetables as possible.

Still have a huge grocery bill though - some of that is down to the wine and beer of course. And expensive cheeses.

I've never gotten into venison, I saw one on the road still moving last year and thought about picking it up but I don't have a freezer.

The price of cheese is very high but that might be a good thing as it is very fattening.

Are there any low-fat cheeses?

if people are unhappy with the quality of their food and how it's grown, harvested, and packaged - the only way an average joe, especially poor, can voice their disagreement is in how they spend their actual money. i would much rather see a food stamp recipient making smart food choices with their food assistance than a cart full of toxic #######. it's food assistance, not assisted death.
