Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!!

I moved from UK to US 5 months ago, I worked in UK for almost 4 years. I applied for a tax rebate through an agent. Just recently, I received an email from them that I underpaid during 2010-2011 tax year ( based on the computation of Inland Revenue) , and it offset my overpayment for tax year 2011-2012, and left me with 200++ GBP that I need to pay.

My question is, I am not yet working, and I don't have the money to pay for it. I actually regretted that I applied for that tax rebate, I didn't know that I underpaid since its the company that is in charged with our taxes etc. Will it affect my AOS application? I am just worried, if they will do a background check or whatever.. I am planning to pay for it, but not now.

Any advice are very much appreciated. Thanks!!

Yes, they'll do a background check. Your foreign debts aren't relevant.

It would only be relevant if you were living in that country and they prevented you from leaving without paying your debt. i have read of that happening. Since you're not in the UK, it shouldn't affect your immigration process.

yes it can affect your aos application its not a civil debt. when my biometrics were taken the fbi or whatever must have checked court records and i had been reported for owing several hundred pounds of working tax credit. essentially this is the same as what you owe because its owed to the inland revenue. i got declined and have had to leave my wife and new family for 10 years. safe to say we cant go on like this, its been a horrendous experience and my life is awful back in the uk on my own. i hope you read this and see that debt affects the aos and your life

I'm so sorry to hear this. I can feel the pain. My husband told me, he will pay the money I owed from the Inland Revenue. We are also both scared of the consequences. I tried to check the Inland Revenue, and it mentioned about magistrates court proceeding (for failed payment). I pray, by the grace of God, it will not come to that point. I am really sorry for what had happened to you.

I already received the letter about my underpayment, and i am waiting for another letter for the instruction on how to pay it. I only owe £300 from them, and I don't really know why I underpaid, maybe the company used the wrong tax code. I really don't know.

I do really appreciate your concern. Thanks a lot.

My prayers are with you and your family.
