What to do for my wife's birthday while she's really homesick

Have a frank discussion concerning if her marriage is more important than where she lives. She may be so busy wallowing in her pity-party that she hasn't considered the damage she is causing.

Adjustment is hard, but the rewards are so wonderful. The journey along the way should leave you with many memories and stories to tell.

For my husband's first birthday here, I took him to a restaurant that specializes in dishes from his country. It was very expensive for us (We should have set a price limit first!) and he ordered everything a la carte that caught his eye. It was the single most expensive meal I have ever paid for or ever will, but in the scheme of things, we budgeted other stuff and ate beans for a couple of weeks and it was a great experience.

For us, I have agreed that if he gives us enough time here to earn the money, we will live the rest of our lives in his country. He is more important than location to me, as I am to him. We will do what is practical and live the best we can in the mean time.

Meetup.com might help you to find others. I met someone on here that helped us out and he and his wife hung out with us and some friends for the 4th of July--it really helped my husband's homesickness to simply have a familiar accent and history for the evening.

There are no easy answers, only levels of commitment to what you want to achieve.
