My fiance are getting really close to the end and our progress is due much in part to this site. What a wonderful resource and that you to everybody who posts and asks questions here. But I need some assistance and could not find answers through searching so I want to ask.

The embassy in Rio received our petition Nov. 1. I would like my finace to send the required packet 3 information to the embassy prior to receiving it. I understand that when she does this she needs to indicate our case number somewhere. How is everyone doing this? Did you include a cover letter? If so what does it say?

Also, in reference to her police certificates, she has a cousin who works for the civil police and this cousin told her she needed something from the embassy prior to requesting her certificate. I hvae read nowhere where this is the case. The only thing I can think of that she might need is her case number (other then completing the form). Is this correct or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance

She needs to send the following forms to the consulate:

- DS-2001 signed

- DS-230 (just part 1) signed

- 1 passaport picture

- copy of passport's information page (first 4 pages)

About the police certificate, it really depends on where she's from. My dad also works for the police and he said she doesn't need anything from the consulate in order to request the certificates. All I had to take was my ID and I had to pay R$14,00 for the state police. She could call them and ask what she needs to present when requesting the "Atestado de Antecedentes".

OUR COMPLETE TIMELINE

Latest steps:

10/26/2006- Consulate receives case (seriously, one month to receive the case?? BS!), and packet 3 that I sent even before they had received the case.

She can mention the RDJ# in the cover letter.

Laura (Laura&Luis) is from Rio, and I remember she mentioned that there is a 'special' procedure to ask the state police certificate in Rio. I can't remember now, but she probably knows... PM her.

I got police certificates from Rio.

Only residents and ex-residents of Rio are required to get this "Certidão da Vida Privada". I asked the Consulate if I needed this and the other civil certificate, and they told me I only needed one of them. I got both, just in case!! You need to download the form from the Embassy/Consulate website and bring to Instituto Félix Pacheco with a copy of her RG (ID card). No need to pay anything. The address is on the form. If you need more intructions on how to get there, PM me. You need to put on the reason why you are asking this document: Imigração para os EUA. That's it. I'm actually going to pick mine up next week. They take about two weeks to prepare it for you.

If you decide to get the other one too, you can also print the form from the Embassy/Consulate site and just write your name on it. When she goes to the Civil Police office, they'll give her a form to fill and she'll have to add a copy of her RG as well. I remember I had to pay, but not much (R$3 I think). It was also ready in two weeks. No need for the RDJ number.

I hope this helps!!

Yep, you have to go to Félix Pacheco institute and ask for it. It's free and it takes 10 days to be ready.

MrMrsKnight already covered what goes on the packet 3. I included a cover letter with my name, saying what was on the packet, my RDJ number, my signature, etc. I sent it the day after I called them and was sure my petition arrived in Rio. Don't forget to write her name on the other side of the 5x7 or 5x5 passport style picture and have her ears and forehead showing with white background.

Don't worry much about the police certificate now, she'll only need them for the interview. The police doesn't need anything from the embassy no, she just has to request the police certificate and put the reason she's requesting, at least that was how I did it, I wrote ''para fins de fixação de residência permanente nos Estados Unidos''.

Mine took lemme see, the Santa Catarina took me 6 work days, the Paraná was more complicated, but I was able to get it in 2 weeks, the federal one was the easiest, I requested in Curitiba, for free and it took me 7 work days. It's always good to have them a month or 3 weeks prior to the interview, just in case something goes wrong, just a thought. I've had all my documents stolen before so I was worried about that, you never know who can use your name.

Good luck!! (F)

Thanks to all who replied. I wound up just typing a cover letter (similiar to Nessas). My fiance is sending the stuff tomorrow.

By the way, she talked to someone at the embassy today and they said to her that there is something in the packet 3 that she takes with her to get her certificate. Now I am a bit confused but we shall see. Anybody have any idea's? The embassy said they are sending her packet 3 this week. I told her to still send her packet 3 things to them tomorrow.

I know the chances are very very very slim, but I am crossing my fingers for a Dec. interview date. Crazier things have happened I am sure and if it doens't then I'll save a ton on plane tickets but I am getting very anxious.

Thanks Again!!!!

It's a request for the police certificates that can be downloaded at the Embassy's website, under fiance forms.
