Not true about Windsor and Sarnia. It will hardly add anything or take away anything from the overall trip, and it will be closer to her if she goes through Sarnia. I've also driven to Florida.

However, you are right about it being better and quicker to go through Niagara. It's closer and if you're turned around then you are right back in Toronto within a short time. Plus it'll save you a couple of hours of driving if you go through Niagara.

Use Google maps to see it for yourself.

I've done both the Windsor & Niagara border crossings before... My parents (who will be driving me down) prefer to go through Michigan, because they like taking the I-75, instead of the east coast and going through the mountains (especially with a big van, in the winter). I know a few people who have taken the Sarnia crossing before from Toronto, but we never have personally. (My dad is old and stubborn, and usually sticks with what he knows! haha)

So, taking the cut off to Sarnia just after London is a 1 to 1/1/2 hour drive to Sarnia depending on the traffic. Continuing on 401 to Windsor is 1 3/4 to 2 hours depending on Traffic. Crossing at Sarnia you then add 1 1/4 to1 1/2 hours to get from Sarnia to the same place where you would have crossed at Windsor POE.

So going to Sarnia and POE at Port Huron then driving south heading towards Florida on I-94: 1 - 1 1/2 hours plus 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours equals 2 1/4 to 3 hours time

Going from cut off to Windsor and then driving south heading towards Florida on I-94- 1 3/4 to 2 hours

Difference: 1/2 to 1 hour longer going through Sarnia plus dealing with the horrendous roads and traffic going through Metropolitan Detroit.

I used to live in Chatham and visited friends in Clinton Township regularly so have driven those roads often.

I think I see what you mean. It will probably be a lot more headache to have to switch highways in Detroit from the I-94 to the I-75 than to just take our usual route.

Thanks for the info everyone - just wanted to be sure to explore all options before heading out!
