This is why I love being an American - people have a right to their opinions and lifestyle choices.

Not only Americans have the right to their opinions and lifestyle choices. You say that like only in America that is true. I have always had the right to my opinions and lifestyle choices and so have a great deal of people that are not American.

What bothers me about the original post is not that they have a differing opinion, really I'm all for differing opinions and discussing them. What upsets me is comparing homosexuality to a lifestyle choice compared to pedophilia or other illegal acts, because pedophilia could just be considered a different lifestyle choice for some. This person mentions a "relationship" between a 50 year old and a 12 year old. Please don't equate homosexuals with criminals and some made up scenarios, calling a 12 year old a "lover". Give me a break, a 12 year old in a sexual "relationship" with a 50 year old is being abused, pure and simple. I don't care in what era, it's abuse.

You do know that sodomy also used to be illegal in the U.S...and is currently illegal in many countries? So the comparison to "other criminal acts" is not as outrageous as you'd like to make it seem. Homosexuals are no longer criminals because the squeaky wheel gets the grease. They have banded together and demanded change. So would you support changes for other people who have been considered criminal because of their sexual choices? Fair is fair. And its not a made up scenario, you know full well it happens. Maybe not 12, but 13, 14, 15, 16 year old girls are regularily "falling in love" with older men. It does happen. And what about Mary Kay Laterneau? She was mid 40's, and hooked up with her 12 year old student. She got tossed in jail twice. And now that he's "of age", they are married with 2 kids. So was it fair for the government to intervene and call her a criminal? They obviously really did love each other. I agree its weird - but we feel that way because of cultural conditioning. You have culturally conditioned to accept homosexuality. 100 years ago - no way. So my comparison is merely to point out that some people still consider homosexuality as wrong as as other sexually deviant behavior. And who are you to say its not? Just because some people in society currently claim its socially accepatble doesn't make it any more natural or acceptable than an older man and a teenage girl or visa versa? Its a slippery slope.

Well, one can be said that liberals get a bad name because they over generalize conservatives. It is actually my only real problem with some liberals in that by demonizing conservatives and painting us all with the same brush they stop any sort of meaningful dialogue.

Isn't that just as bad as the other side saying homosexuality should be illegal? No person can control how another person's brain works. You can't make a person like gays if they aren't programmed that way in the same way you can't make a homosexual like the opposite gender.

This is why I love being an American - people have a right to their opinions and lifestyle choices.

I'm saying that a man (or woman) raping, or coercing a child is not a "relationship".

It would be misconstrued of anyone to equate sodomy and homosexuality exclusively, not to mention exceedingly shortsighted, in addition to evident of unawareness of the very law, about which one presumes to speak.

It used to be illegal in many places of the US for a white person to marry a black person. Laws change. Women can vote. The world keeps turning.

Welcome to the XXI Century!

more 'slippery slope' laws no one pays attention to (virginia):

Not only is it illegal to have sex with the lights on, one may not have sex in any position other than missionary.

If one is not married, it is illegal for him to have sexual relations.

It is illegal to tickle women.

Women must wear a corsette after sundown and be in the company of male chaperone.

Thinking people can agree on this.

They can't seem to get away from it. They remind me of the anti-gun idiots who have to immediately jump to the "Then why not carry concealed thermo-nuclear weapons? Hmmmm? Why not have a battleship in your swimming pool?" where do they lose the concept of self defense and confuse it with National defense?

Criminal behavior is not the issue, EXCEPT that in some states sodomy IS still illegal, even when between a man and woman and even oral sex is classified as a felony called "diviant sexual intercourse" in some states. THAT is what happens when you let a committee decide what consenting adults can do in their own bedroom. THAT is the slippery slope. So a wife can go to PRISON for MORE THAN ONE YEAR for giving her HUSBAND a #######? And you want these people deciding what YOU can do in your bedroom with YOUR spouse? Need we mention that pieces of plastic resembling a ####### are illegal in many states...most famously Texas and Alabama! Can you imagine a legislature of elected adults sitting around and determining which piece of plastic YOU can legally own? It is a felony to seel sex toys in Alabama. Got to jail for MORE THAN ONE YEAR for selling dildos! Seriously. I spent time in Mobile, check out the west end, 1st through 7th streets, and tell me the legislature needs to concern itself with sex toys!

This right here.

It seems when someone opposes something, they naturally need to jump to extremes.

I don't like homosexuals. What are we gonna do next, let old men marry toddlers or women marry farm animals????

Personally I don't give a rat's patoot about homosexuals. Burlington is chock full of lesbians, not so many Gay men but there are some. I think lesbians outnumber them 10 to 1. I really do not care. I am not homosexual, at all, but I really just don't care and I really don't want people telling me what I can do in MY bedroom and that is where it goes.

If they passed a law against homsexual sodomy, for example, my thought would be "uh-oh... "

Please don't act like it's only liberals demonizing conservatives. There are plenty of "**" comments and posts posted here every day.

I have plenty of friends that are commies, hippies, and tree huggers, so I don't paint all liberals with the same brush. I use at least three.

Funny just how similar the RWN's and LWN's are in their thought process. Just change the issue and either side becomes ravenous dogs. It's a good thing that neither of the nut groups are in majority.

i was actually reinforcing your assertion. conservatives as a group/party need to distance themselves from the extremist portion of their support. who in their right mind advocates violence against strangers? in front of children. AND running away from the cops. with the children..?? conservatives as a whole, do not and don't want to be associated with that sort of ignorance.

Thank you. I think of myself as conservative and want no part of that . Now if someone threatens me or smarts off, then a good butt kicking might be in order.

You know i use to think like you . I was wrong. Very wrong. I realized one day that someones sexuality is such a small part of who they are as a person . You know back in the day woman showing thier ankles in public was considered a freak show that should be shielded from kids. I remember one time a black person choose to sit in the white waiting room at the doctor, that was a scandal.
