I've been researching flight tickets as well as the reviews for the JFK POE. The amount of time it takes to clear immigration ranges quite a bit when looking at the reviews. The flight I'm interested in is direct from Cairo to JFK. It lands at 3:30pm. Then, we would take a direct flight from JFK to Orlando. Unfortunately, the latest direct flight I can find is at 7pm. From previous experience, is that enough time to clear immigration, collect bags, re-check bags, etc?

If this isn't enough time, the next flight out is 7am. That means staying over in New York. While my hubby and I would love a night in New York, we will not like the added price for getting a hotel room LOL. But, worse come to worse, I guess that's what we'll have to do.

So, from your experience, can we make do with a 3 and a half hour layover???

Thanks!

In addition to checking the POE Reviews on VJ for those who have gone through JFK, be sure to check the CBP's airport wait times statistics. You can get an idea on what to expect based on the time of day. Safe travels!

My wife landed at JFK around 1 PM and it took her about an hour thru POE. That time of the day is not that busy for International arrivals so technically you have just about enough time.

The problem will arise if your flight lands late or if you run into any issues at POE.

If I were you I would not risk the 7PM flight. Use Priceline to name your own price for a hotel around JFK.

On August 9th 2011 Hanys flight arrived at 3:30pm from Cairo and left for NC at 6:30pm

This is from the review page....

POE at JFK Hany was ask 2 questions.(1) Is your fiancee a US Citizen? (2) How did you meet her? They looked through his embassy package and took a paper from it and wrote on it then he was sent to an office to have his I-94 stamped. Total time was 15 minutes (from getting off the plane to getting the stamp) It was a very good experience :)

That depends on WHEN will he be traveling. My now husband landed at JFK at 4:30pm and I saw him come out to the lobby at 7:00. He told me it was full. He traveled in February.

If he is traveling during the Holidays, when is incredibly busy, he may be stretching it. Remember is not a layover. He needs to clea immigration and then go through security again to make it to the other flight.

Does he have his visa already?

Don't ever do anything you're not willing to explain the paramedics.

I would think 3.5 hours would be eough time, but you never know. Are we talking about over the Xmas season when flights tend to be full? It depends on what stress tolerance you have. Do you risk the 3.5 hours being enough and become a nervous wreck if something happens or do you spend the money and have a nice night in NYC?

Good luck,

Dave

It is probably enough time, but better safe than sorry...and having to make last minute plans to stay the night.. better to just prepare for it.. Sure there is alittle added expense to spending the day in NY.. but it is New York after all.. plenty to see plenty to do.. When will the two of you have a chance to go to New York, see the Statue of Liberty.. Empire State Building.. Twin Towers memorial.. walk down 5th avenue... etc.... Take it as a mini vacation... plus there are MANY small hotels that are not that expensive.. When I went to NYC in 2000 I stayed in a small hotel, the staff did not speak english... the building was old, but had more character than any name brand hotel.. I didn't book the trip my friend did, so I don't have the contact info or I would share it with you. When my husband comes.. I hope that we can plan it that way.. to have an overnight layover... so that we can have a mini vacation!

Not sure if this is the place where you stayed, but I've stayed at the Chelsea Star Hotel and it's great. It's inexpensive (for NYC) and in a great location.

I stayed at this one http://www.marcolaguardiahotel.com/ it's closer to La Guardia than JFK but they have free shuttles in and out of the hotel. It was the only hotel with rooms available, after La Guardia and JFK had cancelled all their flights due to bad weather. This hotel has a decent rate and their service was really good. I called them from one of the free phones at the airport and they went to pick me up.
