And all this apart, if it was the father who did it, what i would like to know is how did it take nearly a year for the mother to realise what had been done to her daughter sounds fishy to me

Probably because, as the father asserted, it was her and her family who did it all along and it took her all that time to convince that poor kid that it was the truth or to actually lie on her dad

FGM is also still common in Egyptian society as well, across religious lines. Leadership from bother major religious communities (Al Azhar and the Coptic Pope) have come down against it, but it persists.
