Renewing Canadian passport in Canada while visiting

I just had a minor heart attack and answered my own question.

I remember when my husband had his passport expedited in 2009, it only cost him less than $120.

It looks like in order to get him a new 10 year passport in 2014 while living outside the us, we could be looking at 235 to 260 bucks.

An extra hundred just to send the thing back to the US?! That's so crazy.

no its more $$$$ as the CDn passport is now 10 yrs vice 5 yrs (when it comes into effect)I belive one will still have the option of having it valid for 5 yrs (at the lower $$$)

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

the extra money is probably because the Canadian passport is good for 5 years but now they are going to increase it to 10 years..

No, if you file in Canada, it's only 160. The increase in fees THERE is due to the new 10 year passport with microchip.

Then ON TOP of that increase is another 100 bucks because we'd file outside of canada and need it returned to the US.

Edit: In Case you like to read long boring info.

The proposed fee structure is half way down:

http://www.ppt.gc.ca/publications/consultations/index.aspx?lang=eng

When you break out the cost per year, really the regular 10 year cost increase is not bad at all.

It's on par with the states and cheaper than some other countries.

It's just that ridiculous 100 dollar extra charge for filling outside that I think is crazy.

There was no charge like that when I was going to file my US renewal from Canada.

Hmm,

I wonder if the final rates will include a US/Canada rate with US being considered domestic rather than international. I know that the fee to send documents outside of the continental North America does go up to around $100 but sending by courier between Canada and US is more in the vicinity of $60 expedited. This may be something that expatriates living in the US need to ask and get more clarification. If we also pay the same as someone living, for example, in Brazil, then yes - it may be that US resident Canadians are subsidizing the costs of sending passports to expatriate Canadians living literally 'overseas'.

Which reminds me - my passport expires in February so I should get on with renewing it now before the new fees come into effect in the Spring.

Sorry for resurrecting an "old" thread..

But I'm planning to renew it in Canada and will be there for three weeks, should be enough time? Any need for expedited?

Also it's OK to put parents' address right?

I mean $100 extra is a lot just to ship back to USA!

I took my application in over Christmas and expedited it and booked my pickup for one week later (with two weekday stats in there).

It’s a lot faster if you can walk it in to a passport office and pick it up.
