Renewing Canadian passport in Canada while visiting

Ok so I've read several threads on renewing Canadian passports and the application part seems easy enough, but there is one thing that is still unclear to me.

If my wife, Jennifer flies up to Canada for a visit and while there she goes to a Passport Canada office to renew her soon to be expired passport they will clip a corner of her current passport and mark it cancelled.

So, how does she fly back to the U.S. then with a cancelled passport? Has anyone been in this very situation that can advise?

Thanks!

She will have to pay extra fees to get her passport expedited.

hmmm, I thought the Nexus was a land and sea card only, but it does appear that if the Canadian airport has a line for Nexus users you can just use your card. Can anyone confirm that you don't need a passport flying from Toronto Pearson to the U.S. if you have a Nexus card and have your iris scan done?

Thanks!

Most large Canadian airports allow Nexus members to use Nexus kiosks and skip the regular lanes. This has been the practice for a number of years. But unlike at the land border, you still need a passport. THat's because airlines require passports when taking international flights. THere have been some instances of Nexus members occasionally being allowed to board on the strnegth of their Nexus card alone (I've done it myself), but it is not standard practice, and you could be in a big jam if the airline says no, which is most likely.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I don't want to get my wife stuck in a bad situation like that. Appreciate the info!

Configuration is correct about the NEXUS. WRT the passport.... I did the same. Went for a visit and expedited my passport renewal. I shouldn't have bothered. My Mum came with me to renew hers and got the regular service. I paid for the expedite and went back to pick mine up the day before hers arrived in the mail. I could have just had it sent to her house. <_<

Isn't that what the green card is for, entering the US? She can renew her passport from the US as well.

One can apply for it from the USA as well.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Not sure if this is the case anymore, but I recall like in the 90's the photo requirements were different in Canada than they are here for passports.

I never got my passports done when I went up there to visit, but I did get my passport photos done up there. That way when I got back and filed from the US for a Canadian passport, I just used the Canadian photos.

Now things may have changed and maybe the photos are the same sizes now. Not sure. Haven't really compared my passport to my Canadian passport at all...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Nope, still different sizes.

I saw someone post about it the other day that said their walgreens (I think it was walgreens) had an option for canadian, though!

I just had a minor heart attack and answered my own question.

I remember when my husband had his passport expedited in 2009, it only cost him less than $120.

It looks like in order to get him a new 10 year passport in 2014 while living outside the us, we could be looking at 235 to 260 bucks.

An extra hundred just to send the thing back to the US?! That's so crazy.
