I'm taking a course this weekend from AlMaghrib Institute. Not quite sure what to expect!!

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5

And here's my endorsement -

I've taken a few courses from Sunnipath and always enjoyed them. This one is free, so don't miss it! Sheikh Faraz is quite intelligent and easy to listen to.

If you're contemplating taking some of their paid courses (all well worth it), this is the perfect time to take Sunnipath for a test drive.

Although it says it starts at a certain time, they'll most likely be late. Even with all the fancy technology, they still can't escape MST (muslim standard time)

I've heard good things about this course in particular. They use my husband's favorite scholar - ibn Hazm. I've been hoping that they would offer it in my area, but alas, nothing yet.

AlMaghrib tends to be more salafi in orientation. Not that that's a bad thing, but there has been some bad blood between AlMaghrib students and Sunnipath/Zaytuna students. Thankfully, some of the shayouk from the different camps have been addressing it lately.

Also, I think the title of the event is rather silly. Thought provolking, but I can see the freeper like people twisting it all out of wack and making it seem like a suicide bomber convention or something

Looks interesting but is it online or you actually have to go to Texas or does one of the tribes in each area have their own classes?

Oh wow $165 for one course? :o Do they give discounts to the poor or those of us who would have to travel and pay for a hotel and all that???

I went to one seminar so far in this area and it was on preparing for Rhamadan. It was really good but I didn't like that I was the oldest one there. It was mostly Harvard and BU students and it was totally segregated...men on one side and women on the other. Another thing I didn't like was that it was all sheiks talking and they wouldn't give eye contact to the women asking questions...which I understand but for some reason it really bugged me.

Insha Allah I will be attending an islamic studies hour course each week at my masjid starting in two weeks. The woman who runs it finally called me back after my bad experience of no one being there and said that they had moved the time up to 10am, though she had forgot to adjust the website. I hope to meet some wonderful women there and I will like that it is women teaching women. ;)

It's not really something that can be taped, but the last time they had some free events, they had them up on their webpage for a few weeks after. Check when you get home!

VP - The price for the class is only $85.00, or at the door it's $95.00 I don't know why they haven't updated the site with the right pricing.

Also, they hold the classes all over the US. The classes move from city to city so that many people can attend. This one is being held about 45 minutes from where I live, so it's pretty close.

Melly, if you're near San Fran, consider checking out some of the courses offered at Zaytuna. They offer some free courses on weekends from time to time.

I checked out the "tribes" and it looks like there's one in VA and one in TN and it looks like there was a class being offered in ATL so I guess there's one there too?

Unless they offered it in Charlotte or Columbia I would have to stay in a hotel... though I admit this would be something I'd like to look into when my husband's here... I'm not much of an alone traveler

Rahma is this course you're advertising online or do you have to go there in person too?

The course that I originally posted about is on www.sunnipath.com and is an online free course this Friday.
