I have my test scheduled on dec19. How long should I expect the test to be? After I take the test, is the oath in the same day?

When I took the test for Citizenship in 2008, it only took me about 3-4 minutes to write the answers in. It was written and verbal for me, and the oath ceremony was done another day. I'm not sure how they are doing things now that there is a new test.

Couple of things Gheradina:

You don't have a test scheduled - you have an interview. You could ace the 6 questions and the language component and still not be approved.

As for the same day oath, that's impossible to say. But your chances are higher at certain offices - so where will your interview be held?

The interview itself (general knowledge and english test, going through your N-400 etc) will take 15-20 minutes if there are no issues. The waiting in the waitingroom can be several hours.

For the civics test, verbal, main course of study was in the car in that 4 1/2 hour drive over there. Stepdaughter saw it for the first time, memory was fresh, both her and my wife answered the first six questions correctly. Wife had the old test, stepdaughter the new test, both were about the same except added some geographical questions, better know the names of the oceans that border the east and west coasts and name one state that borders Canada.

English test is both verbal and written, but with the latter, spelling errors are permissible. Wife had to writ, "I am a good cook". Wasn't too bad for her since she is a certified translator. Neither for my stepdaughter with four years of English high school and two years of English college under her belt.

Shocked that St. Paul now has the same day oath, but only if you are lucky enough to get an appointment in the morning. Stepdaughter's was in the afternoon, we had to make another nine hour driving trip about three weeks later. Old office manager wanted at least 3,000 applicants for really long lines for the oath ceremony, somehow, she was dismissed. It's up to your office manage about same day oaths.

got you. I am not in a hurry, just wondering how much should I take off from work. It sounds like I might need all day. Thanks for the info.

Just out of curiosity: Whar languages does your wife speak? Certified translator is a job that I was looking into also, but not sure if I can make a living out of it. I am currently a HS teacher. Can your wife give me more info about what she did to become a translator? How many hours does she work? If she's willing to tell me any of these, I'll type my e=mail address on the forum. thanks
