I was just wondering if anyone can shed some light on when RFEs are requested during the process. Is it soon after they receive petitions or are our petitions just sitting there waiting to even be looked at still? Anyone have any insight?

USCIS - 40 DAYS
2012-10-30: FedEx delivered I-130 to Chicago Lockbox Mail Room
2012-11-01: NOA1 by email - MSC
2012-11-02: $420 (x3) debited from our account
2012-11-05: NOA1 hard copies received, Priority Date 2012-10-30

na, it's the actual thing, 'to adjudicate'.

the human that reviews the petition, to determine whether or not to approve it, is called 'The Adjudicator'.

the process of approving a petition, or dinging one for a RFE, is called 'adjudication'.

so, whilst you may think, it's the word of the day; trust me - it's the word for that human.

The adjudicator adjudicates the petition.

meanwhile, back at the ranch..... Have a Happy Poutine Saturday !! I'm getting ready to try a new batch of poutine gravy - I have some new drippings from some interesting meat to try...

Contrary to popular belief and common sense, a petition is not adjudicated (looked at and worked on) until months after the NOA1. The petition spends about 95% of the time between NOA1 and NOA2 in a box at a USCIS storage facility waiting for a human to spend 20 minutes approving or denying it. If this human decides that something crucial is missing, he/she will issue an RFE.

In a nut shell, any RFE will come at the time when an NOA2 is to be expected.

Quite honestly I think it sounds like an interesting job. Wonder how someone gets into that.

We just got an RFE, it's beem 6 months of waiting for our case to make it to the top of the pile. Hopefully you won't get an RFE at all and go straight to the next step, but its gonna be a few months unless your case has been expedited for some reason I think.

Lucy & David... what was your RFE for? THAT SUCKS - to be waiting 6 months like that and to get an RFE.

I definitely understood that the petitions sit around waiting to come to the top of the pile but I guess I had some hope that I misunderstood and that RFEs would be generated earlier so that they could be dealt with. Waiting is definitely the hardest part and being on standby to find out if you f'd something up or forgot something or simply need to provide more is even more frustrating.

The good news is that when an adjudicator issues an RFE, they don't put your file back in the storage room. They generally keep your file handy until the RFE is responded to, and then move you to the top of the pile. If dealt with promptly on your end, I'd say a good estimate is a 2 - 4 week delay if issued an RFE. It's depressing, but sure beats 4 - 6 months.

I worked at a hotel store in DC a few years ago. DHS had a big conference, and there were tons of USCIS workers there.A large number of them stopped by my store. Contrary to popular belief, they seemed like ordinary humans.

This was actually one of my favorite reads on VJ when I was waiting for my NOA2. Q and A session with a former USCIS adjudicator.

Look on line fill out an application anyone can do it.
