The United States is interested in establishing a humanitarian and disaster relief force at U-Tapao, a naval and air force complex on the eastern seaboard built by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War.

"The return to U-Tapao would be very symbolic for the U.S., sending a message to China that it is returning to mainland South-East Asia," Panitan Wattanayagorn, a military affairs expert at Chulalongkorn University, told the Post.

Such a move would require approval by Thai lawmakers, some of whom are skeptical about the U.S. military being permanently based in Thailand, he said.

I know plenty of military would love to be stationed in Thailand, but I don't know why

Better than Columbia for hookers. I think he is sending 600 Generals and 3 enlisted men.

There will be some very lucky Joe's stationed there.

thailand is the only asian country to remain uncolonised by a foreign power throughout it's history. it was allowed to exist as a buffer zone between the french and germans in the colonial period. it, of all asian nations, has a unique position in the east, and has historically had a special relationship with the USA.

that being said, the article specifically stated the US interest in thailand. it is all about sending a message to china that her expanding influence in the far east will not remain unchecked by America.

I think you meant to say the British and French. Germany has never had any colonies there that I recall. King Chulungkorn (Rama V) was smart as he brought in political advisers from Scandanavia to advise him on how to avoid being colonized.

Way back when I was 18 years old my first overseas military assignment was a year at Ubon Air Base Thailand, followed by a year at Korat Air Base Thailand. That 18 year old boy hadn't ever seen anything like that. Talk about going to heaven. Ended up spending 17 of my 30 years in the military overseas.

US troops in Thailand are certainly nothing new, and joint US Thai military exercises (Cobra Gold), are common.
