Anyone get their Canadian passport renewed in 2012?

I just sent mine in today by Fedex Express. It is suppose to be delivered on Monday, the 19th to Passport Canada.

Because I left it to the last minute, I'm afraid that I won't get it back in time for my trip back to Canada for the holidays. :(

The website says 20 business days starting from when they receive it... but that there might be delays, and estimated times may vary.

So I was wondering how long it's taken you guys to get yours renewed by mail?

Also --is there ANYWAY to travel back to Canada w/o one? I'm a PR with a green card and a Canadian citizenship card.

THANK YOU!!!

Generally you should give it 6 weeks. I went to a service Canada centre and it only took 3 weeks to get it back but I'm in Canada. Maybe someone who's in the USA can give you a better timeline.

I received mine like 3 weeks after renewing in August. It didn't take long. I live out in Alberta. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Not current....but 2 yrs ago--I mailed mine in via USPS (slowest option) and I still had it back to me (in VA) in 3 weeks. At 1 time on the passport Canada website, they had an estimate of time thingy!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I renewed my passport with name change back in July, I sent it standard UPS on the 12th and it arrived to them on the 19th, I ended up getting my new passport back the 1st of Aug. :) So mine took about 2 weeks from the time they recieved it to get to me.

With regard to your second question- yes you can re-enter Canada without a passport IF you travel by road in a personal vehicle, and if you carry proof citizenship such as a citizenship card or Nexus card or expired passport. These things will not be enough if traveling by air, train or bus.

As of a couple years ago, (at least at the Ambassador bridge) you need Tito travel by land as well. Unless you have an enhanced drivers license or nexus card.

Oh man --I really shouldn't have left it to the last minute! :( They will receive it on Nov. 19th and I have a ticket to fly back to Canada (from U.S.) on Dec. 21st. I hope I'm as lucky as those of you who got it back in under a month. But I didn't leave myself much room for error.

AandB --what additional info did you have to send in?

I got my Canadian photo taken at a Walgreens that had a "Canadian" option for its passport photo taking software. Hopefully that's good enough.

Anyone else out there remember how long it took to renew their passport by mail?

Thank you!

My signature on the application wasnt the same as on my passport (i change it often) so they asked me for a ID with signature to prove it's me. Also i wrote what my jobs were for the past 2 years, but i had breaks and i forgot to write "housewife" for when i wasnt working... Stupid stuff :(

Can you reasonably change your flight from a Canadian destination to a border US destination then rent a car to cross the border into Canada? I don't know how feasible that is, but it is one way you would be able to travel to Canada if your passport is not returned in time. Check into it, at any rate. (The difference in flight costs might be enough to cover the car rental as well since it is always cheaper to fly to US border destinations than to fly into Canada - crossing that border seems to add $500 on the cost . )
