Marry to get free Lasik surgery?

If I dump the K1, I can go to Brazil and marry Rey, at which point I can get on his insurance, which happens to cover Lasik surgery 100% unlike pretty much every other insurance company. Then we could file DCF. :)

Let me add that I am almost blind (like legally without lenses) and have been lusting after this surgery for awhile.

Basically I'm posting this because I'm wondering if anyone can think of any clever ways I could somehow still use his insurance with the constraints of the K1. With my eyes the surgery is like 7k here or something.

:innocent:

What about going the k1 route (you're almost there!) and coming to Brazil for the surgery after you marry him? It's only a few months away....

Or you could move to New York, find a good job here and pay the $7k yourself. :innocent:

If she can get it for free in Brazil, why pay 7k anywhere?

Because Brazil is dodgy?

What?

As in, "go in for eye surgery, wake up in a ditch without a kidney"?

Ok maybe not THAT dodgy but laser surgery *is* risky -- we are talking about a person's eyes!

At least here in the US you can sue the pants off the hospital and doctors involved if something

(God forbid) goes wrong.

I wouldn't do it anywhere but the US or Europe. Definitely not in Brazil.

Do you even know anything about the quality of private hospitals in Brazil? Or you never bothered looking it up and just assumed you were right "because a developing country can't possibly have decent hospitals"? I don't know of ONE single person that has had any kind of problem because of a low-quality assistence. And trust me, probably 99% of people I know has had some kind of surgery.

My grandma was almost blind and had a surgery (I don't know what kind of surgery though) two months ago (which was performed by my uncle, an eye doctor... and who by the way owns a hospital).

I'd never have anything done at a public hospital here, you're right, simply because I can have better than what they can offer me.

What legal recourse do you have if something goes wrong?

What type of malpractice protection do they provide?

What if a corrective secondary procedure needs to be done later?

So wait, first your concern was the low quality, now I got you to narrow it down to the legal aspect of it? Cool.

My point was that she shouldn't give up on having this surgery because, according to you, it's dangerous. Maybe there are other things to consider (like the possible need for a second procedure), but if she chooses to have her surgery done at a well known private hospital, then the quality of assistance shouldn't be a big concern.

What legal recourse do you have if something goes wrong?

Why is it even a question? Sue them. The fact she'll be covered by her husband's health insurance makes it even easier.

What type of malpractice protection do they provide?

You can get screwd in any country. You need to ask yourself (and your health insurance company) that even if you have a surgery in the US.

I do think that having a surgery in a place close to where you live is better though, because you'll always have the doctor there in case you need something.

Yes, quality is my concern, first and foremost. A third-world country is a third-world

country -- it'll show somewhere, sooner or later. The US is a much more orderly society

and things are more likely to run smoothly.

And yes, you can get screwed in any country, but at least you would know what to do

if it happened here.

Mywilson,

have you ever lived in Brazil? Do you know that much about our problems to be talking like this?

We have fewer problems here with Lasik than you do there. You know why? Because the doctors that perform it here are better trainned for that. Eye medicine here, as plastic surgery and reproductive surgery, among other fields are very well developted.

In the case something does go wrong (you know, sh## happens anywhere, even in the US), we also have a fairly good judicial system and anyone can sue their doctors for malpractice.

I'd advice you to do some research before posting. Try this:
