I doubt that it was the hard-core tea-party types we see now that were the additional votes that helped them carry those states. Surely you can see the gradual shift in party loyalty of the deep south. Low and middle income white voters have gone from democrat to republican there in a relatively short period of time and without parallel in other regions. If you don't believe it was the appeal to racial fears and tensions perhaps you will enlighten us with the real reason!

To the contrary! I see it as a very positive sign that not only was Obama re-elected, it was by a decisive margin! In addition we will now have at least an approximation of universal health insurance coverage and the repubs are on defense, now conceding that tax rates on people in my income bracket may need to go back up. Our future is looking brighter than it has at many times in our recent past. There is a lot still to be done but the trajectory is a positive one!

Actually, it's only the revisionists who deny the facts surrounding the events that led up to the Civil War. It is clear, historically, that the issue of slavery was at the center of the conflict. Initially, the southern states complained that the free states were disregarding slave owners rightful ownership of property by refusing to return slaves who had escaped. They wanted the Federal Gov't. to step in and enforce their Right of Property. The southern states only decided to secede when they felt the free states were not following along the same rules.

I understand that. My point though was, if states seceed or attempt to seceed now, what would future historians be debating about? My grandparents grew up in a generation that was in retrospect labelled "the greatest generation". We are making it way too easy now for future generations to label us "the stupidest".

IMO, people who want their state to seceed from the union have already seceeded from reality. Some people say let them go, but in a sense they are already gone. Maybe it's best to just get out of the way and hope that they don't take everyone else down with them.

As I write this, seven petitions have passed the 25000 signature mark needed for a response from the federal government. Those seven states take in almost 25% of federal dollars. So good luck to them, but something tells me that new reality they're dreaming of is going to come with a giant kick in the ###.

I assume you know what a federal mandate is?

Get those off the backs of these states and you will see a shift in that number.
