Where did she get it? I must have it! :o They're from Tekbir

My parents are originally from Turkey, but my siblings and I were born in Belgium. They often visit relatives in Turkey during the summer vacation period. The younger sister I was talking about has pretty much been all around the world.

Are those your family's hajj pictures? Lucky them! Also, cute cute clothes. Turkish sisters always seem to have such a great fashion sense (I know, massive stereotype).

Those are so cute, Rahma !!! Really beautiful dresses. (F)(F)(F)

Now on to the task at hand.... sorry the quotes aren't nesting properly -- apparently I have a formatting problem somewhere deep down in there, but not much time to track it down. So I'll put my current remarks in color and leave the quotes in black and white, to help make it *slightly* more readable:

LisaD and (to some extent) sarah and hicham seem to be having a bit of difficulty following the thread and the various responses and who's talking to whom, so I will try to walk y'all through it.

After a series of questions about the logistics of daily life while wearing the niqab (face veil) -- most of which were certainly posed in a civil enough manner, and all of which VP answered civilly enough -- some posters were still unsatisfied with her responses. The topic then veered to the level of one person posting a pic of Michael Jackson, trying to insinuate some sort of comparison between "Jacko" and VP's choice of attire. This is what prompted my comment:

What VP chooses to wear, and when and where to wear it -- whether or not another finds it to his or her own liking -- is her choice, her right, and her business.

It's ok to be curious and ask questions, and VP has really been quite patient and gracious about answering them. But I have to say that some of the comments here are really crossing the line from "innocent questions" into ridicule and personal attacks.

I am saddened (yet not surprised) to see that some of the unkindest remarks are coming from other women -- women who would likely characterize themselves as "liberated," yet for some reason feel the need to publicly snipe at another woman's choice of attire.

Meow.

It drew this reaction from LisaD:

Hey, WOM, before you start lecturing everyone for judging VP on what she wears. for mocking her/etc...perhaps give VP the same lecture when she's callin 7th graders sluts and whatnot

This is perplexing -- it makes me wonder if you are reading the same post as I wrote. Where exactly did I "lecture everyone" for "judging VP" ?

Since LisaD goes on to ask/suggest why don't I post a response to some entirely different topic in some entirely different thread, I answer that:

I will comment where and when I choose. Some people have the time and inclination to get up into every single thread; even to carry what I consider rather high schoolish grudges here and there. However, I don't.

If I don't comment on most of the tens of thousands of posts here, rest assured -- it's because a lot of topics don't really interest me enough to warrant a response, even if I had the time and inclination to read them all. The argument "why don't you comment over on that thread" is quite beside the point, and seems to be an attempt to deflect possible criticism here.

In the meanwhile, along comes Sarah and hicham (since people seem to be confused here, I would like to clearly state that she posted nothing in this thread that was either a personal attack or an attempt to ridicule.) She concludes:

I disagree with you. I asked her a couple of questions that WERE innocent and out of curiosity. VP posted a picture of herself in full veil and some people were wondering how to go about tasks such as eating or picking up her kids etc. I think it's clear that you don't get along with LisaD and maybe even tmma but that doesn't make their questions attacks on VP. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean that they aren't capable of asking innocent questions.

Sarah and hicham -- you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but you make a couple of assumptions here -- specifically, that I "like" or "don't like" particular people (on a message board, for pity's sake !) and that any criticism I might make would be dependent on that criteria. So I responded to you:

If you've paid attention, you would know that I've had my disagreements with VP. There have also been times when I've agreed with her. Much like any other person here -- you both included.

I have no interest in playing a VJ version of "Heathers."

Then LisaD returns to write:

Just as I will comment where and when I choose...we can go back and forth on this all day you know. Classic message board bog standard argument. However, telling others how and what to post seems kinda silly since you feel you have that right, but then want to infringe on the same rights of others....especially when the comments and questions were genuine. Yet you come in here telling people what to post.....

'Do as I say not as I do' with you, innit?

I really have to ask -- what in the world are you babbling about ? Again, please point out exactly where I am "telling others how and what to post," or "infringed" on your (or anyone's) "rights" in any way. * Shrug * inexplicable.

Next, Lisa D has issues with this paragraph:

If I don't comment on most of the tens of thousands of posts here, rest assured -- it's because a lot of topics don't really interest me enough to warrant a response, even if I had the time and inclination to read them all. The argument "why don't you comment over on that thread" is quite beside the point, and seems to be an attempt to deflect possible criticism here.

This has nothing to do with anything....I don't know why you're going off on a tangent here about other posts. If you're referring to my comment about VP and calling the 7th grader a #######, then you missed the point altogether.

"Nothing to do with anything" ??? Going off on a "tangent" ???? Have you completely lost your mind ? It's your * own * comment that I am answering, as you finally figure out. If your comment had "nothing to do with anything," then why in the world did you post it in the first place ? Illogical.

But LisaD continues to type away furiously, still with the mistaken perception that my response to sarah and hicham's remark (see above) was somehow aimed at her:

I do not pay particular attn with whom you disagree and with whom you don't. Nor do I keep a scorecard for you. Despite what you may think, it doesn't matter to me! I really couldn't care less personally...but no one here was being out of line nor was anyone starting a bickering contest...funnily enough, until you showed up casting aspersions on people for asking questions...with your finger-pointing judgements.

Earth to LisaD: not * everything * is about you. Try to read threads more carefully -- in particular, try to notice that there are actually other people out there in the VJ world, and they actually add their own comments. (In case you missed it *again*, see above re: response to sarah and hicham.

Moving along:

I have no interest in playing a VJ version of "Heathers."

Ok, you can play the VJ Board Mommy then...sit on your throne telling the rest of us what to do

Again, please point out the part where I tell "the rest of us" what to do. Talk about rolleyes -- get a grip.

Here, LisaD takes a moment to slam another poster who dares to express agreement with the basic premise of my initial post.

Right on target!

Yeah, lemme jump on this bandwagon too!

and my response seems to get under her skin as well:

By the way, mybackpages is no bandwagonist, either -- and if you think so, you are quite mistaken.

Saw her on the thread a few times before you showed up. Didn't say anything but 'yeah right' after you posted, which I thought was funny. Hence my comment. But let's not get anyone's panties in a bunch.

Who's panties are in a bunch ? You said she was jumping on a bandwagon, apparently for no other reason than because she didn't jump on yours. I told you that you're mistaken. You actually watch for people who are reading at the bottom of the thread, waiting for them to comment.... and then speculate as to their motives when they don't pound out responses with the frequency or content of your liking ? That's just.... um.... weird.

Anyway, it's my comments here that seems to send LisaD completely off the deep end:

Both of you seem to have leaped to the assumption that my post was directed specifically at you. But now that you mention it, perhaps you are recognizing something in yourselves.

Oh so now you're playing amateur shrink as well as know-it-all? omG how funny! Perhaps a lil reading comprehension class would help, for you missed the 'if you're referring to me' response at the beginning of my initial response to you. I am not going to let you sit here and cast a blanket statement on all of us who are asking questions, because you're apparantly too backhanded to actually be upfront and say 'PERSON X I THINK YOUR POST IS...'....no, you'd rather assert yourself in such a cowardly way as to not be direct, yet then be slimy enough to respond with 'oh maybe you're recognizing something in yourselves'. WOM, it's not cute, it's not clever, it's not witty...it's actually quite pathetic & I'm quite embarrassed for you. So go look in the mirror and tell yourself that you're not as important as you think you are. Lather, rinse, and repeat until you come back down to earth.

:jest:

This is a textbook example of why one should never hit the "send" button while suffering from the spasms of an uncontrollable fit of emotion. You've managed to be pompous, shrill, overwrought and insipid, all at the same time. The height of hasty harangue, hyperbole and hysterics... a huff of hackneyed hyperventilating histrionics. Heh... hilarious.

As they say.... "Fling stone inna hog pen... di one bawl out a him it a lick."

I don't speak farmer lingo...sorry!

Nor, apparently, can you understand plain English -- at least not enough to follow this thread, nor distinguish between responses to your own remarks, and comments that are clearly directed at others.

However, my posts are not here for your eyes only. There are plenty of others around here who understand quite well what I'm saying.

First of all no one ever said anything about MBP. I know her and I like her and I respect her and this has nothing to do with her. Since you don't have time to read everything I think it's nice that you chose this thread as a means to attack Lisa and try to tell us what we can and cannot say or ask here. We were asking her questions and they have nothing to do with you. Thank you so much for taking the time to remind us to respect VP. No one here has shown any disrespect. She's a biiiig girl and if she doesn't want to answer questiont then she doesn't have to. She has already chosen not to answer some withouth you telling us to respect her. The only thing I have learned about myself here is that I am so happy that I have little in common with some of the people here.

Thanks!

I think you're lost. Again, you are entitled to your opinion, but you have missed several points in the thread -- my response is already posted, above.... if you care to catch up.

I wish I could fix those quotes!

Tfaddali !!! Please :help:

I struggled with it for a while... it's somewhere around the MBP quote, cause everything else previewed fine... but I just couldn't figure out where the glitch was.

Now off to work...

Definately need to schedule a trip to Turkey. Interesting how the best hijabi fashion comes from a country that supresses hijab.

Turkey is definitely about high fashion, LOL!! Maybe it is the influence of the French? When I was in Istanbul in '99, I notice alot of fashionable women's clothing shops in the Taksim area where we stayed.

They also make some really nice belly dancing costumes, but I won't post any of those here.

My husband was a store manager and the owner would often go to Turkey and bring back clothing collections. The women clothing in the store were awesome, but for very small or skinny women. When I think of turkish clothing I think of Mavi Jeans. Those are nice jeans.

Mostly just my sister and her friends from school. She's part of uh I can't think of the name (Something -Nur-) but they have like a muslim school in Antwerp, Belgium and she teaches the younger students there about Islam. Right now, she's working on her Master's in Public Relations though and last time we talked, she mentioned she scored an internship at a Turkish broadcasting company in Istanbul. Lucky her :P I'm so proud of her :star:
